PITTSBURGH, PA - The Johns Hopkins men's swimming team placed second and the women finished third at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational held Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 6 and 7. Emory won both the men's and women's competitions, finishing above Hopkins, Carnegie Mellon and Case Western Reserve.

The men's and women's teams were both in second place behind Emory after the first 12 events on Saturday before Carnegie Mellon pulled ahead of the Johns Hopkins women in the second half of the meet.

On Saturday, Ali Foster finished first in the 200 breaststroke while Kalei Walker and Erica Pakkala took second in the 100 freestyle and 200 backstroke to lead the women. Matt Fedderly and Zane Hamilton went one-two in the 200 breaststroke, Ryan Kim took second in the 200 backstroke and Sean Kim placed second in the 200 butterfly for the men.
 

 

The men's 200 medley finished second behind Emory in event 18 and J.P. Balfour took first in the 400 IM and 100 backstroke to help the men stay close behind Emory. Fedderly placed first in the 100 breastroke and second in the 200 IM, and Brian Sneed took second in the 100 butterfly before Brad Test ended the day with a first-place finish in the 50 freestyle.

The men ended the meet with 840 points behind Emory (1,048) and above Carnegie Mellon (683) and Case Western Reserve (465).

On the women's side, Pakkala continued to shine on Sunday with a second-place finish in the 100 backtroke. Diana Smirnova won the 200 IM at 2:14.51, beating Emory's Caitlin Hoey (2:14.90). Both the 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams placed second behind Emory.

The women finished with 671.50 points behind Emory (1,197) and Carnegie Mellon (102.50), and above Case Western Reserve (562).
