Hopkins Finishes Second at Carnegie Mellon Invitational

PITTSBURGH, PA - The Johns Hopkins men's swim team finished second at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational with 810 points. Emory University won the invitational with 943 points. Carnegie Mellon finished third (808) and Case Western fourth (473). Junior Brad Test (Dresher, PA/Germantown Academy) and freshman John Thomas (Montrose, CO/Montrose) each won two individual events for the Blue Jays. Sophomore Colin Kleinguetl (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood) opened the invitational with a second place finish in the 1650 Free with a time of 16:24.49. Thomas then won his first event of the weekend, taking first in the 200 Back with an NCAA B cut time of 1:52.25. Test followed that with a win in the 100 Free with a time of 46.98. Junior Matt Fedderly (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh School) placed third in the 100 Breast (2:10.66), followed by Kleinguetl's fourth place finish in the 200 Fly (1:57.26). Next up, Hopkins won the 400 Medley Relay (3:31.64). Thomas swam the first leg of the relay, followed by Fedderly, freshman Bob Sershon (Chicago, IL/St. Patrick) and Test. The same relay team followed that with a win in the 200 Medley Relay (1:35.94). Kleinguetl then finished second in the 400 IM, finishing in 4:12.19. Junior Richard Guerard (Chatham, NJ/Morristown-Beard) then took second in the 200 Free (1:44.76), with freshman Neil Mahoney (Minneapolis, MN/Minnetonka) took third (1:44.88). Thomas then won his second individual event of the weekend, taking first in the 100 Back with a B cut time of 51.85.
Hopkins won yet another relay event, taking first in the 200 Free Relay with a time of 1:26.98. Thomas swam the first leg, followed by Mahoney, Test and junior Kevin Walsh (Athens, GA/Cedar Shoals). Test and Thomas later combined for a one-two finish in the 50 Free. Test took first with a time of 21.65, with Thomas coming in at 21.96 for second. Hopkins closed the meet with a win in the 400 Free Relay. For this relay, Mahoney swam the first leg. Thomas swam the second, followed by Walsh and Test. The team's time of 3:11.59 was more than a minute faster than the Emory team that finished second. Next up for Hopkins is the Loyola Invitational the weekend of November 10-11. |
