Hopkins Falls at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, MD - In its second straight meet against a Division I opponent, the Johns Hopkins men's swim team lost 120-82 to Maryland Friday afternoon. The meet was highlighted by two wins for the Blue Jays (0-2). Hopkins opened with a second place finish in the 200 Medley Relay. Freshman Neil Mahoney (Minneapolis, MN/Minnetonka) swam the first leg, followed by junior Matt Fedderly (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh School), sophomore Bob Sershon (Chicago, IL/St. Patrick) and junior Brad Test (Dresher, PA/Germantown Academy). The team finished in 1:36.18. Next up was a second place finish in the 200 Free by reigning DIII National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week, sophomore Colin Kleinguetl (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood). Kleinguetl finished in 9:51.91, followed by senior Richard Guerard (Chatham, NJ/Morristown-Beard) in fourth (10:05.41). Mahoney then won his first collegiate event, taking first in the 200 Free (1:45.28). Sophomore David Postetter (Kenmore, WA/Inglemoor) finished fourth (1:47.82) and Fedderly finished sixth (1:50.62). Test followed that with a second place finish in the 50 Free (21.51). Freshman AJ Blood (McClean, VA/Sidwell Friends) finished third (22.16) and senior Kevin Walsh (Athens, GA/Cedear Shoals) finished fourth (22.54). Freshman Todd Spock (Niceville, FL/Niceville) finished fourth in the 200 IM (2:00.57). He was followed by sophomore John Kegelman (Yorktown, PA/Tabb) in sixth (2:02.03) and Kleinguetl in seventh (2:02.85).
Sershon took home yet another second place finish for Hopkins, in the 100 Fly (52.43). Senior Keith Parent (Amherst, MA/Amherst Regional) took fourth (53.17) and Blood took fifth (53.19). Test followed that with his second, second place finish of the meet, this time in the 100 Free (47.09). He was followed by freshman Justin Samuels (Boston, MA/Andover) in fourth (50.68) and sophomore John Barrett (Martinez, GA/Lakeside) in fifth (51.29). Guerard finished in second in the 100 Back (54.46), followed by Mahoney in third (55.36) and Walsh in fifth (56.15). Next up was Kleinguetl with his second, second place finish of the meet in the 500 Free (4:51.38). Postetter came in at third (4:55.08). In the final individual event, Fedderly finished fourth (59.70) in the 100 Breast, pacing the Blue Jays. Spock finished fifth (1:00.96) and Kegelman took sixth (1:01.55). In the final event of the meet, Hopkins won the 400 Free Relay. Freshman Spiros Moisiades (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) swam the first leg, followed by Postetter, Sershon and Blood in a time of 3:21.40. Hopkins returns to action on Saturday morning as Franklin & Marshall visits the Newton White Athletic Center. The meet, which is set to start at 11:00 a.m., will be the first this season for Hopkins against a Division III opponent. |
