Annapolis, MD - Despite winning seven of the 13 events, the Johns Hopkins men's swimming team dropped its 2002-03 season-opener to Navy, 125-112, Friday night in Lejeune Hall.

Senior Scott Armstrong (Medford Lakes, NJ/West Morris Central/Bernards) led the Blue Jays by taking the 800 freestyle in 8:27.46 and the 400 freestyle in 4:05.39. Other individual winners for Hopkins included freshman Sean Kim (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch), who captured the 200 butterfly in 2:10.44, and senior Justin Brannock (West Palm Beach, FL/Dreyfoos School of the Arts), who won the 100 freestyle in 53.18.

Senior David Lofthus (Honeyoe Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) took the 200 backstroke in 2:09.34, while junior Scott Pitz (Paoli, CA/Conestoga) captured the 200 breaststroke in 2:25.70.
 

 

The Blue Jays also took one of the two relays in the meet, as sophomore J.P. Balfour (Plano, TX/Plano East), Pitz, Lofthus, and Brannock won the 400 medley relay in 3:54.04.

Hopkins was looking for its second consecutive win over Navy, as the Blue Jays defeated the Midshipmen, 121-84, last season after Navy won the first 28 dual meets between the schools.

JHU continues action Saturday when both the men's and women's teams travel to Lancaster, PA, for a 12 noon meet with Franklin & Marshall.

Event Winners: 400 Medley Relay - JHU (Balfour, Pitz, Lofthus, Brannock), 3:54.04; 800 Freestyle - Armstrong (JHU), 8:27.46; 200 Freestyle - Boyd (Navy), 1:54.35; 50 Freestyle - Fenningham (Navy), 23.52; 200 Individual Medley - DeMell (Navy), 2:10.81; 1-Meter Diving - Gon (Navy), 259.12; 200 Butterfly - Kim (JHU), 2:10.44; 100 Freestyle - Brannock (JHU), 53.18; 200 Backstroke - Lofthus (JHU), 2:09.34; 400 Freestyle - Armstrong (JHU), 4:05.39; 3-Meter Diving - Gon (Navy), 292.50; 200 Breaststroke - Pitz (JHU), 2:25.70; 400 Freestyle Relay - Navy (Warren, Linn, James, Boyd), 3:32.46.
