ANNAPOLIS, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's swim team opened its season against Division I Navy on Saturday. The Blue Jays (0-1) suffered a 169.5-101.5 loss at Lejeune Hall to the tough Mids (4-0). The Blue Jays won five of 16 events at the meet.

Hopkins opened with a second place finish in the 400 medley relay with a time 3:59.35. Freshman John Thomas (Montrose, CO/Montrose) swam the first leg, followed by sophomore John Kegelman (Yorktown, VA/Tabb) and senior Keith Parent (Amherst, MA/Amherst Regional). Junior Brad Test (Dresher, PA/Germantown Academy) anchored the relay for the Blue Jays. Sophomore Colin Kleinguetl (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood) then won the 800 Free (8:40.69).

Senior Rich Guerard (Chatham, NJ/Morristown-Beard) finished in a tie for third in the 200 Free with a time of 1:57.69. Freshman Neil Mahoney (Minneapolis, MN/Minnetonka) finished just behind him in fifth (1:58.00). Thomas took second in the 100 Breast with a time of 1:00.31. Kleinguetl followed up his win with a second place finish in the 200 Fly (2:11.93). Parent took fourth (2:14.98). Test then won the 50 Free with a time of 24.14. Test followed his win with a third place finish in the 100 Free (54.40).

Hopkins wrapped up the meet with wins in the 100 Free, 200 IM and 200 Free Relay. Sophomore Bob Sershon (Chicago, IL/St. Patrick) won the 100 Free with a time of 58.77. Frehsman AJ Blood (McClean, VA/Sidwell Friends) took second (1:00.48) and Parent took third (1:00.51). Freshman Todd Spock (Niceville, FL/Niceville) won the 200 IM (2:18.02) edging out junior Matt Fedderly (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh School) (2:18.35). Kegelman took third (2:22.29) in the final individual race. Test, senior Kevin Walsh (Athens, GA/Cedar Shoals), Mahoney and Thomas swam the winning relay in the 200 Free Relay. The team came in at 1:38.10.
 

 

Hopkins returns to the pool on Friday, October 27 the team visits College Park to face Maryland. The meet is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
