ANNAPOLIS, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's swim team opened up the season in its traditional way, traveling to Annapolis to take on Division I Navy. The Midshipmen prevailed 145-115 over the visiting Blue Jays. Senior John Thomas (Montrose, CO/Montrose) picked up the Blue Jays first win, in the 50 Back, before the Midshipmen began swimming exhibitions. The meet featured some non-traditional events, including the 400 Meter Breast and Back Relays.
The meet opened with the 200 Meter Medley Relay. The Blue Jays team of Thomas, sophomore Timothy Nam (Forest Hills, NY/Bronx High School of Science), senior Spiros Moisiades (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) and senior Teddy Bulakul (Bangakok, Thailand/Hotchkiss) took fifth with a time of 1:49.22. Freshman Kevin Morlock (Kingsville, MD/Perry Hall) then took fifth in the 800 Meter Free with a time of 8:48.13. Hopkins took second in the 400 Meter Back Relay with a time of 4:02.45. Sophomore Preston Youngdahl (Wayzata, MN/Minnetonka), Thomas, freshman Durgesh Das (Houston, TX/James E. Taylor) and senior Neil Mahoney (Minneapolis, MN/Minnetonka) swam the relay.
In the 400 Meter IM, sophomore Markus Kowalsky (Shorewood, MN/International School of Minnesota) took fifth with a time of 4:53.37. Hopkins then took second in the 400 Meter Breast Relay. Nam, senior Chris Razavi (Fairport, NY/Fairport), freshman Jason Ho (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) and Mahoney swam the relay in 4:36.43. Freshman Nick Schmidt (Bells, TN/University School of Jackson) then took fourth in the 200 Meter Free in 1:58.98.
In the 50 Meter Fly, sophomore
Eddy Zandee (Kailua, HI/Punahou) was Hopkins top finisher, taking fifth in 26.76. Thomas then won the 50 Meter Back in 27.12. The Blue Jays finished third in the 400 Meter Medley Relay with a time of 4:08.25. Mahoney, Nam, Schmidt and Ho swam the relay for JHU. Morlock followed with a fifth place finish in the 400 Meter Free, clocking in at 4:16.99. Navy then began swimming exhibitions for the remainder of the meet.
Hopkins returns to action on Friday, October 23 as the Blue Jays travel to College Park, MD to take on Division I Maryland. The meet is scheduled to begin at 3:00 pm.
