Hopkins in Fifth Headed into Final Day of the 2006 NCAA Championships
March 18, 2006 MINNEAPOLIS, MN - The Johns Hopkins men's swim team remained in fifth place with 185 points headed into the final day of the 2006 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. Twenty-six time defending champion Kenyon maintained its hold on first place with 324 points. Several Blue Jays posted season-best times during the day.
The best finish of the day for the Blue Jays came in the first event on Friday. Hopkins finished second in the 200 Medley Relay just .04 of a second behind Kenyon. Sophomore Ryan Kim, senior Tyler Harris, senior Sean Kim and sophomore Brad Test combined for a time of 1:31.77, besting the Jays' previous fastest time of 1:33.17.
Following that, sophomore Matt Fedderly finished 12th in the 400 IM with a time of 4:04.79. Sean Kim placed 10th in the 100 Fly with a season-best time of 50.26. Senior Gary Itskovich finished 16th with a time of 51.39, his best time of the season. Next up was the 200 Free, where junior Richard Guerard placed sixth with a time of 1:40.38, his best time of the season.
Harris placed 10th in the 100 Breast, finishing in 56.78, just .02 of a second faster than his previous best time. Ryan Kim swam to a fourth place finish in the 100 Back, finishing in 50.57. Junior Kevin Walsh placed ninth with a time of 51.29. In the final event of the day, the 800 Free Relay, Hopkins finished 10th. Guerard, Test, freshman Kyle Foust and junior David Strickland combined for a time of 6:51.07.
The 2006 NCAA Championships conclude on Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Competition begins with the preliminaries in the mornings. Events scheduled for Saturday are the: 1650 Free, 200 Back, 100 Free, 200 Breast, 200 Fly, 3M Diving and 400 Free Relay.
