PITTSBURGH, PA - Sophomore John Thomas won his second individual event of the weekend and was named the Swimmer of the Meet at the 2008 ECAC Open Championships. Johns Hopkins finished second at the championships with 464 points, 60 points behind Harvard, and head coach George Kennedy was named the Coach of the Meet. The Blue Jays were the only Division III team in the top eight.

The final day of the championships opened with a fourth place in the 1650 Free for junior Colin Kleinguetl (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood) with a time of 16:07.87, a season-best time by nearly 33 seconds. Thomas followed that with a win in the 200 Back in 1:49.58. Thomas previously won the 100 Back.

In the 100 Free, sophomore Neil Mahoney (Minneapolis, MN/Minnetonka) finished in seventh with a time of 47.21. While sophomore Chris Whelan (Haddonfield, NJ/Delbarton) finished in 14th with a career best time of 47.76. The Blue Jays then took first, third and fifth in the 200 Breast. Senior Matt Fedderly (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh School) won the event in a career best time of 2:03.59. Junior John Kegelman (Yorktown, PA/Tabb) claimed third (2:04.39), while freshman Brian Keeley (Rockford, MI/Rockford) finished in fifth (2:06.73).

Kleinguetl then finished fifth in the 200 Fly with a time of 1:53.22. Hopkins wrapped up the meet with a win in the 400 Free Relay. Swimming the relay were Mahoney, sophomore Teddy Bulakul (Bangkok, Thailand/Hotchkiss), Thomas and senior Brad Test (Dresher, PA/Germantown Academy). The team swam the second fastest time of the season, 3:03.95.
 

 

Next up for Hopkins is the NCAA Championships in Oxford, OH from March 20-22.
