PITTSBURGH, PA - The Johns Hopkins men's swimming team moved into second place after day two of the ECAC Championships Saturday evening. Sophomore John Thomas (Portsmouth, NH/St. Thomas Aquinas) won the 100 Back, while the 800 Free Relay team also picked up a win.
The Blue Jays opened with a fifth place finish in the 200 Medley Relay. Swimming the relay were sophomore Neil Mahoney (Minneapolis, MN/Minnetonka), senior Matt Fedderly (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh School), sophomore Teddy Bulakul (Bangkok, Thailand/Hotchkiss) and freshman Brian Keeley (Rockford, MI/Rockford). They finished in a time of 1:34.12. Junior Colin Kleinguetl (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood) then finished in sixth in the 400 IM with a season-best time of 4:06.96.
In the 100 Fly, sophomore Spiros Moisiades (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) swam a career best time of 51.17 to finish eighth. Senior Brad Test (Dresher, PA/Germantown Academy) then finished second in the 200 Free with a time of 1:41.75. Hopkins then took fourth through sixth in the 100 Breast. Junior John Kegelman (Yorktown, PA/Tabb) finished in fourth in a time of 57.44. His prelim time of 57.35 is a career best. Coming in fifth was Fedderly with a time of 57.62, while Keeley followed in sixth (57.64).
Thomas followed that by winning the 100 Back in 49.75. Finishing in eighth was Mahoney with a time of 53.51. His prelim time of 52.47 is a career best. That pushed Hopkins into third place in the overall standings with 270 points, just nine behind second place Rider. Hopkins closed out with the win in the 800 Free Relay and added 40 points to its total. Swimming the relay were Mahoney, junior
David Postetter (Kenmore, WA/Inglemoor), Test and Thomas. They finished in 6:48.81. The win pushed the Blue Jays past Rider and into second place. Hopkins is now just 40 points shy of first place Harvard.
The championships wrap-up on Sunday with the 1650 Free, 200 Back, 100 Free, 200 Breast, 200 Fly, 1 meter diving and 400 Free Relay.
