UMBC Knocks Off JHU in Men's Swimming

BALTIMORE, MD - The UMBC men's swimming team posted a 128-101 victory over Johns Hopkins Saturday afternoon at the White Athletic Center. The Retrievers improved to 12-1 with the win, while the Blue Jays fell to 7-4.
The Hopkins men started the meet strong, as the 400 medley relay team of junior J.P. Balfour (Plano, TX/Plano East), senior Scott Pitz (Paoli, PA/Conestoga), sophomore Brian Sneed (Chattanooga, TN/McCallie) and senior Kyle Robinson (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional) won its race in 3:28.99.
However, UMBC responded by winning the ensuing four races to take control of the meet. Carlos Canepa won the 1000 freestyle in 9:36.97, and Jakub Sroczynski following by taking the 200 freestyle in 1:45.19. After Brad Green captured the 50 freestyle in 21.42, Sroczynski won the 200 individual medley in 1:54.28.
Blue Jay sophomore Sean Kim (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch) won the 200 butterfly in 1:55.24 as Hopkins pulled within 70-55, but Green won the 100 freestyle in 47.51 and Sroczynski followed by taking the 200 backstroke in 1:52.58 as the Retrievers went ahead, 97-66. Canepa then won the 500 freestyle in 4:40.99 before Pitz took the 200 breaststroke in 2:08.22 for Hopkins.
The Blue Jays closed the meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay, as the team of senior Rich Guerard (Chatham, NJ/Morristown-Beard), freshman David Strickland (Houston, TX/Strake Jesuit College Prep), senior Loren Robinson (Coats, NC/Triton) and junior Paul Zalewski (St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood) took its race in 3:16.48.
The Blue Jays return to action on February 20-21 when Hopkins competes in the Emory Invitational in Atlanta, GA.
