Hopkins Swimming Teams Defeat Mary Washington

Baltimore, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's and women's swimming teams each defeated Mary Washington Friday afternoon in the White Athletic Center. The Blue Jay men defeated the Eagles, 146-108, while the women recorded a 136-117 victory.
Freshman Matthew Chana (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) led the JHU men's team by winning the 1000 freestyle in 9:47.56 and the 500 freestyle in 4:55.24. Fellow freshman Brian Sneed (Chattanooga, TN/McCallie) won the 200 freestyle in 1:47.81, junior Kyle Robinson (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional) took the 50 freestyle in 21.59, and junior Loren Robinson (Coats, NC/Triton) captured the 100 freestyle in 48.89.
Sophomore J.P. Balfour (Plano, TX/Plano East) won the 100 backstroke in 53.53, while freshman Sean Kim (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch) took the 200 backstroke in 1:59.81. Senior David Lofthus (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) captured the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.42, junior Oliver Buccicone (Rochester, MN/Rochester Lourdes) won the 200 breaststroke in 1:58.81, and sophomore Jon Kleinman (North Oaks, MN/Mounds View) took the 200 breaststroke in 2:19.88. The Hopkins women were led by its freshmen, three of whom won two events in the meet. Stephanie Leaman (Grosse Point Woods, MI/Grosse Point North) took the 1000 freestyle in 10:39.18 and the 500 freestyle in 5:18.70, while Abiona Redwood (Kingston, Jamaica/St. Andrew) won the 50 freestyle in 24.87 and the 100 freestyle in 54.74. Additionally, Jessica Chang (Penfield, NY/Penfield) captured the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.11 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:27.69. Freshman Kristin Stepaniak (Shoreview, MN/Mounds View) won the 100 backstroke in 1:02.96, while fellow freshman Katie Herbst (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) took the 200 backstroke in 2:15.78. Sophomore Diana Smirnova (Las Cruces, NM/Phillips Exeter Academy) won the 200 freestyle in 2:00.53, and sophomore Betsy Maragakes (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) captured the 200 butterfly in 2:16.43. The 200 medley relay team of Stepaniak, Chang, Smirnova, and Redwood won its race in 1:52.10. The Blue Jay men improved to 5-5 with the win, while the women are now 4-6. Both teams return to action next Friday when Hopkins travels to UMBC for a 4 p.m. meet with the Retrievers. -30- |
