BALTIMORE, MD - Senior John Thomas (Montrose, CO/Montrose) broke the pool record in the 100 Back as Hopkins defeated visiting St. Mary's, 126-58, on Friday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve their dual-meet record to 3-4, while the Seahawks drop to 4-4 on the season.

Hopkins opened the meet by sweeping the top three spots in the 200 Medley Relay. The team of Thomas and fellow seniors Neil Mahoney (Minneapolis, MN/Minnetonka), Spiros Moisiades (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) and Teddy Bulakul (Bangakok, Thailand/Hotchkiss) took the win with a time of 1:37.65. Freshmen Dylan Coggin (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy), Jason Ho (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East), Tyler Woods (San Diego, CA/La Jolla) and Connor Murphy (Cheshire, CT/Choate Rosemary Hall) took second with a time of 1:39.90. Coggin's split of 25.73 was a season-best. And the team of sophomores Timothy Nam (Forest Hills, NY/Bronx High School of Science), Stephen Niemiec (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester Adams), Preston Youngdahl (Wayzata, MN/Minnetonka) and Daniel Raynard (Glenview, IL/Loyola Academy) took third with a time of 1:43.96.

Hopkins followed that up by sweeping the top three spots in the 1000 Free, 200 Free, 50 Free and 200 IM. In the 1000 Free, freshman Kevin Morlock (Kingsville, MD/Perry Hall) paced the Blue Jays with a time of 10:09.27. Freshman Alec Contag (McLean, VA/Langley) finished in second with a time of 10:18.31, while sophomore Patrick Lynch (Surrey, England/ACS Cobham International School) took third in 10:19.65. Freshman Nick Schmidt (Bells, TN/University School of Jackson) picked up a win in the 200 Free, clocking in at 1:49. 82. Murphy followed in second place with a time of 1:53.26, while freshman Christopher Price (Arcadia, OH/Findlay) took third with a time of 1:53.55.
 

 

Sophomore Eddy Zandee (Kailua, HI/Punahou) won the 50 Free with a career-best time of 21.44. Mahoney followed with a second place finish in 21.77 and senior Chris Whelan (Tewksbury, NJ/Delbarton) took third with a time of 22.27. In the 200 IM, sophomore Markus Kowalsky (Shorewood, MN/International School of Minnesota) took the win, finishing in 2:05.04. Sophomore Preston Youngdahl (Wayzata, MN/Minnetonka) followed in second place, finishing in 2:08.14. Moisiades then took third with a time of 2:08.16.

Bulakul picked up a win in the 100 Fly, clocking in at 54.18. Nam claimed third place with a time of 57.21. Hopkins then swept the top three spots in the 100 Free, with Woods taking first in 49.75. Coggin followed in second in 49.78 and freshman Carter Gisriel (Lutherville, MD/Towson) in third in 50.18. Thomas followed that up with his record-breaking swim in the 100 Back. He finished in 51.34, breaking the record, which he had shared with R. Maddox of Loyola, by 0.02 seconds. Ho followed in second place with a time of 55.79, while freshman Durgesh Das (Houston, TX/James E. Taylor) took third in 55.86. Hopkins swam exhibitions for the remainder of the meet.

Hopkins returns to action next weekend with a pair of road meets. On Friday, Hopkins will travel up York Road to take on Division I Towson at 1:00 pm. JHU will then travel to Lexington, VA to take on Washington & Lee at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 30.
