Dec. 7, 2001

Baltimore, MD - Johns Hopkins senior midfielder Ryan Kitzen (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas Division III All-America First Team announced Friday, becoming the first Blue Jays player to be named to the first team.

With his selection, Kitzen is now eligible for the Division III Player of the Year award, to be announced in early January.

Kitzen, who was named to the Mid-Atlantic Region First Team on Thursday, scored nine goals and added an assist for Hopkins this season. Last month he was named to the Centennial Conference First Team for the fourth straight year.

Kitzen finished his career with 29 goals, 20 assists, and 78 points, putting him in the top 10 on all three Hopkins career lists. This season Kitzen led the Blue Jays to a 17-3 record and the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Region title.

Kitzen is the fourth Hopkins player to earn All-America honors under head coach Matt Smith, who took over the program in 1993. He joins Eric West, a third-team selection in 1994, John Del Monaco, a second-team selection in 1998 and 1999, and Matthew Doran, a third-team selection last season.

AGATE NSCAA/adidas Division III All-America First Team: GK-Chris Boyles (Messiah), D-Glen Collins (Greensboro College), D-Ryan Kitzen (Johns Hopkins), D-Brendan Mayer (Macalester), M-Shaun Cavanaugh (Wheaton), M-Mike Iacono (Kean), M-Josef Powell (Williams), M-Ignacio Scarella (Rowan), F-Alex Blake (Williams), F-Ted Giannacopoulos (Williams), F-Chris Heslep (John Carroll).
