BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins men's soccer senior Akash Naik (Simpsonville, SC/Hillcrest) has been named a Third Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American. A co-captain for the Blue Jays, he is just the third player in JHU men's soccer history to earn ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors.
To be nominated for the CoSIDA Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.3 or higher cumulative grade point average and be a starter or significant reserve.
Naik has started all but one game this season in the midfield for Hopkins and has scored three goals and added four assists. His four assists this season are tied for second best on the team and tie his career high. For his career, he has totaled 33 career points on 12 goals and 10 assists. He is a three-time Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll selection and a Dean's List student.
A volunteer in the Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Hospital, Naik completed an internship with an orthopedic surgeon last summer. In addition, he has volunteered at the Meyer Center for Special Children. He is majoring in economics and boasts a 3.78 cumulative GPA.
Naik has helped the Blue Jays to a 13-5-4 overall record, a runner-up finish in the Centennial Conference Tournament and their 12th NCAA Tournament appearance. Hopkins has advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the seventh time in school history and will take on Stevens Tech on Saturday at 7:30 pm in Hoboken, NJ.
