Men's Soccer Weekly Report 11/14 Nov. 14, 2001
The Team: The Coach: Matt Smith (Towson, `88) has completed his ninth year as head coach of the Blue Jays. He is the program's all-time winningest coach with a 137-30-9 record. Smith has led JHU to the NCAA Tournament in five of the last eight years and has guided the Blue Jays to postseason play in eight straight seasons. The Results: The Blue Jays captured the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Region Championship last weekend with a 3-2 win over Moravian and a 1-0 shutout of Franklin & Marshall. Ryan Kitzen (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) scored the game-winning goal Saturday in the semifinals against Moravian, while Matthew Doran (Stormville, NY/John Jay) scored the game's only goal on a penalty kick versus the Diplomats in the final. The ECAC title was Hopkins' second in three years, as the 1999 team also won the Mid-Atlantic Region title. Seven Blue Jays Named to All-Conference Teams: Matthew Doran, Aerik Williams (Columbus, OH/Columbus Academy), and Ryan Kitzen were named to the All-Centennial Conference First Team, the league announced Tuesday. Paul Galli (Roslyn, NY/Herricks), Chad Tarabolous (Tulsa, OK/Cascia Hall), Greg Mangels (Glenside, PA/Cheltenham), and Adam Hack (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) were named to the second team. Hopkins' seven selections made it the most represented school on the all-conference teams. Scott Runyon of Franklin & Marshall was named the conference's player of the year. Brienza, Hack Named to Academic Honor Roll: Juniors Daniel Brienza (Farmingville, NY/Sachem) and Adam Hack were named to the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll on November 2. Brienza is an economics/computer science major, while Hack is an economics/business major. 21 men's soccer players in the league received the honor. Tough Competition: JHU's win over No. 18 Drew marked the Blue Jays' first win over a ranked opponent since a 2-1 victory over No. 6 Rowan on October 8, 1998. This season Hopkins also defeated Gettysburg, Western Maryland, Muhlenberg, and Franklin & Marshall (twice), all of whom were ranked in the Mid-Atlantic Region when they played Hopkins. Doran Heading West: Matthew Doran finished in second place on the Johns Hopkins and Centennial Conference career records for goals and points. All four records are held by Eric West, who played at Hopkins from 1994-97. Doran also finished his career with 28 assists, tying him for second place (with West) on the JHU career list. Williams, who finished his career with 40 assists, broke the previous record of 33 held by Gregory Stevcic of Gettysburg and Frank Adamson of Haverford. Earlier this season Williams recorded an assist against Alvernia to break Eric West's JHU career mark of 28 assists. Williams tied for the team lead with 13 assists this season and finished his career with 27 goals, tied for the ninth most in school history. His 94 points put him in fifth place on the JHU career points list. Doran Moving Up D-III Lists: Matthew Doran concluded his career with 168 points, putting him in 17th place on the career points list in Division III history. Doran's 70 career goals put him in 14th place in Division III history. Galli and Kitzen Rank In Career Lists: Paul Galli concluded his career with 30 goals, putting him in sixth place on the Hopkins career goals list. Galli also finished with 21 assists, fifth at Hopkins, and 81 points, sixth on the JHU career points list. Ryan Kitzen finished right behind Galli on all three lists with 29 goals, 20 assists, and 78 points. Tick, Tick, Tick: Before Drew's Olaksandr Stakhiv scored with 12 minutes remaining on Oct. 6, Hopkins had recorded six straight shutouts and had gone 642:15 without giving up a goal. Goalkeeper Gary Kane, Jr. (Lansdale, PA/LaSalle College) went 617:40 without giving up a goal, the 11th longest streak in Division III history. This season the Blue Jays recorded 13 shutouts, one short of the single-season school record.
Blue Jays Among Conference Leaders: Matthew Doran led the conference in goals and assists this season, and had 19 more points than anyone else in the league. Aerik Williams led the league in assists per game, while Chad Tarabolous ranked fourth in points per game. Ryan Kitzen was fourth in goals per game, and goalkeeper Gary Kane, Jr. led the league with a 0.78 goals against average. As a team, Hopkins led the Centennial in scoring offense (3.40 gpg) and in scoring defense (0.75 gpg).
