Nov. 6, 2008

LANCASTER, PA - Johns Hopkins men's soccer senior midfielder Matty Carlson (Bristol, CT/Loomis Chaffee) has been named the Centennial Conference Player of the Year as announced by the conference office on Thursday. In addition, six Blue Jays earned All-Centennial Conference honors and five were named to the Academic Honor Roll.

Carlson, a unanimous selection, is joined on the first team by sophomore forward Scott Bukoski (Sagamore, MA/Bourne). Earning second team honors are senior forward Nick Gauna (Evanston, IL/Evanston) and freshman defender Corey Adams (Cedar Grove, NJ/Seton Hall Prep). Sophomore forward David Drake (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) and junior goalie Matt Mierley (Weston, FL/St. Thomas Aquinas) are honorable mention selections.

Carlson, a 2007 NSCAA First Team All-American, is a three-time All-Centennial Conference pick. He earned second team honors in 2006 and was a first team honoree in 2007 and 2008. He is the fourth JHU player to earn Centennial Conference Player of the Year honors and is the first field player in school history since 2000 to earn the honor. Carlson is a three-time captain and has scored 10 goals and tallied four assists in his career in the midfield. A Dean's List student, he was also named to the Centennial Academic Honor Roll.

Bukoski is a two time first team selection and in 2007 became just the eighth freshman in conference history (fifth from Hopkins) to earn first team honors. The only sophomore on the first team, he is tied for the lead in the Centennial in points (23) and goals (9) and tied for third in assists (5). For the second consecutive season, Bukoski leads the team in points and goals. A First Team NSCAA All-Region pick in 2007, he was just the fifth player in school history to score 20 or more goals. He was recently named a First Team CoSIDA Academic All-District selection and was named to the Centennial Academic Honor Roll.

Gauna earns All-Centennial honors for the third time in his career. A first team selection in 2006, he earned second team honors in 2007. He has made his mark in the Hopkins record book in his four seasons. He is the all-time games played leader (83) and currently ranks eighth with 80 career points. Gauna is also tied for 11th in career goals (27) and fourth in career assists (26). His four assists so far this season are second best on the team.

Adams is one of just two freshman to earn All-Centennial honors this season and is just one of two freshman defenders from Hopkins to earn All-Centennial honors (Peter Kahn, 1994). He has anchored a defense that ranks third in the Centennial in goals allowed (18) and goals against average (0.86). Adams has scored one goal and added an assist from the backline in 2008.

Drake, a second team all-conference pick in 2007, earns honorable mention honors despite missing six games with a broken hand. The sophomore is tied for fourth on the team in points (9) and is fourth in goals (4). In addition, he already ranks in the top 25 in Hopkins history with 18 career goals.

Mierley earns All-Centennial honors for the first time in his career. He has played nearly 1,400 minutes in the goal for Hopkins so far this season and posts a 0.78 goals against average and a .782 save percentage. Mierley ranks fourth in the Centennial in goals against average, fifth in save percentage and is tied for second in shutouts (6). In conference only games, he is tied for the lead with five shutouts. He ranks fifth in program history in career minutes played (2966:45) and sixth in career shutouts (10).

In addition to Bukoski and Carlson, senior Akash Naik (Simpsonville, SC/Hillcrest) and juniors Evan Giles (Ponte Vedra Beach, FL/Episcopal) and Rami Zeidan (Eden Prairie, MN/The Blake School) have been named to the Centennial Academic Honor Roll.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, November 8 in the Centennial Conference semifinals at Swarthmore College. The third-seeded Blue Jays will take on the third-seeded Bullets of Gettysburg in the first semifinal, scheduled for 11:00 am at Clothier Field. Hopkins is 43-20-9 all-time against Gettysburg, including 2-2-0 in the Centennial Conference Tournament. The Bullets won the regular season meeting in Gettysburg, 3-1.
