The Team: The Coach: Matt Smith (Towson, `88) is in his ninth year as head coach of the Blue Jays. He is the program's all-time winningest coach with a 134-29-9 record entering Wednesday's match at Gettysburg. Smith has led JHU to the NCAA Tournament in five of the last seven years, and has guided the Blue Jays to postseason play in seven straight seasons. The Results: Hopkins fell to No. 18 Richard Stockton on Wednesday, 4-2, breaking the Blue Jays' nine-match winning streak. Matthew Doran (Stormville, NY/John Jay) and Matt Weill (Merrick, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) scored the Hopkins goals. JHU rebounded by defeating the Red Devils, 5-0. Five different Blue Jays scored: Ryan Kitzen (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa Park), Paul Galli (Roslyn, NY/Herricks), Doran, Doug Pollack (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury), and Daniel Brienza (Farmingville, NY/Sachem). The Conference Tournament: The first-ever Centennial Conference Tournament will be held on November 3-4. Hopkins needs to win both of its matches to clinch the top seed and host the tournament. JHU can also clinch with a win Wednesday at Gettysburg coupled with a Muhlenberg win over Franklin & Marshall. The winner of the conference tournament earns a bid to the Divsion III NCAA Tournament. On the Offensive: Johns Hopkins has outscored its opponents this season, 58-9. The Blue Jays have amassed 157 points while holding their foes to 23, and have a 323-74 advantage in shots on goal. Goalkeepers Gary Kane, Jr. (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale College) and Nicholas Challen (Southborough, MA/Algonquin Regional) have combined for 11 shutouts, three shy of the school record, and have needed to make just 36 saves between them this season. Tough Competition: JHU's win over No. 18 Drew marked the Blue Jays' first win over a ranked opponent since a 2-1 victory over No. 6 Rowan on October 8, 1998. Gettysburg and Franklin & Marshall, the two teams left on Hopkins' schedule, are ranked sixth and seventh, respectively, in the Mid-Atlantic Region. The Blue Jays have already defeated Muhlenberg and Western Maryland, who are both ranked in the region. Tick, Tick, Tick: Before Drew's Olaksandr Stakhiv scored with 12 minutes remaining on Oct. 6, Hopkins had recorded six straight shutouts and went 642:15 without giving up a goal. Goalkeeper Gary Kane, Jr. went 617:40 without giving up a goal, the 11th longest streak in Division III history. Doran Named To Centennial Honor Roll: Matthew Doran was named to the Centennial Conference Honor Roll Monday after scoring a goal against both Richard Stockton and Dickinson. Doran Heading West: Matthew Doran is closing in on the Johns Hopkins and Centennial Conference career records for goals and points. All four records are held by Eric West, who played at Hopkins from 1994-97. Doran is in second place on all four lists, he needs 6 goals and 11 points to overtake West. Williams now has 38 career helpers after recording assists against Richard Stockton and Dickinson, breaking the previous record of 33 held by Gregory Stevcic of Gettysburg and Frank Adamson of Haverford. Earlier this season Williams recorded an assist against Alvernia to break Eric West's JHU career mark of 28 assists. Doran Moving Up D-III Lists: Matthew Doran now has 162 career points, ranking him 21st on the career points list in Division III history. Doran's 67 career goals put him in a tie for 20th place in D-III history. Blue Jays Among Conference Leaders: Matthew Doran leads the conference in goals and assists, and has 20 more points than anyone else in the league. Chad Tarabolous (Tulsa, OK/Cascia Hall) is fourth in points per game and fifth in goals per game, while Ryan Kitzen is fourth in both goals per game and fifth in points per game. Aerik Williams ranks third in assists per game.. Goalkeeper Gary Kane, Jr. leads the league with a 0.64 goals against average and is sixth with a 79.1 save percentage.
