Men's Soccer Weekly Report Oct. 9, 2001
The Team: The Coach: Matt Smith (Towson, `88) is in his ninth year as head coach of the Blue Jays. He is the program's all-time winningest coach, with a 130-28-9 record entering Wednesday's match with Haverford. Smith has led Hopkins to the NCAA Tournament in five of the last seven years, and has guided the Blue Jays to postseason play for seven straight seasons. The Results: Matthew Doran (Stormville, NY/John Jay) scored a goal and two assists and Chad Tarabolous (Tulsa, OK/Cascia Hall) added a goal and an assist to lead Hopkins to a 4-1 win over Drew on Saturday. On the Offensive: Johns Hopkins has outscored its opponents this season, 44-5. The Blue Jays have amassed120 points while holding their foes to 12, and have a 243-53 advantage in shots on goal. Goalkeepers Gary Kane, Jr. (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale College) and Nicholas Challen (Soughborough, MA/Algonquin Regional) have combined for eight shutouts and have needed to make just 25 saves between them this season. Tough Competition: JHU's win over No. 18 Drew marked the Blue Jays' first win over a ranked opponent since a 2-1 victory over No. 6 Rowan on October 8, 1998. Hopkins will get another shot at a ranked opponent on October 17 when the Blue Jays travel to No. 17 Richard Stockton. Also on the schedule are Haverford, Gettysburg, and Franklin & Marshall, all of which are ranked in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Tick, Tick, Tick: Drew's Olaksandr Stakhiv scored with 12 minutes remaining on Saturday, denying Hopkins' bid for its seventh straight shutout. The Blue Jays went 642:15 without giving up a goal and scored 28 goals themselves in that span. Doran Named To Centennial Honor Roll: After scoring a goal and adding two assists against Drew, Matthew Doran was named to the Centennial Conference Honor Roll. Doran has now won the conference player of the week award once and been named to the honor roll twice. Doran Heading West: Matthew Doran is closing in on the Johns Hopkins and Centennial Conference career records for goals and points. All four records are held by Eric West, who played at Hopkins from 1994-97. Doran is in second place on all four lists, he needs 10 goals and 20 points to overtake West. Centennial Conference Career Goal Leaders Name, School Years No. Eric West, Johns Hopkins 1994-97 72 Matthew Doran, Johns Hopkins 1998- 63 Rich Billings, Haverford 1996-99 61 Brad Getz, Ursinus 1993-95 55 Frank Adamson, Haverford 1994-97 51 Centennial Conference Career Point Leaders Name, School Years No. Eric West, Johns Hopkins 1994-97 172 Matthew Doran, Johns Hopkins 1998- 153 Rich Billings, Haverford 1996-99 147 Frank Adamson, Haverford 1994-97 131 Justin Daniel, Washington 1997-00 123 A Helping Foot: Aerik Williams (Columbus, OH/Columbus Academy) recorded an assist against Alvernia to break Eric West's mark and become the school career assist leader with 29 helpers, and has added three since. Williams is just one assist shy of equaling the conference career record of 33, held by Gregory Stevcic of Gettysburg (1995-97) and Frank Adamson of Haverford (1994-97). Williams has already joined the duo as the only players in conference history to hand out more than 30 assists in a career. Williams could have company as the season progresses, as Doran has 27 career assists. Blue Jays Among Conference Leaders: Matthew Doran leads the conference in goals and assists, and has 14 more points than anyone else in the conference. Chad Tarabolous is fourth in goals per game and third in points per game. Goalkeeper Gary Kane, Jr. leads the league with a 0.49 goals against average and is fifth with an 82.1 save percentage. As a team, Hopkins is first in both scoring offense and scoring defense. JHU Stellar in September: Hopkins' loss to Arcadia broke the Blue Jays' 26-match unbeaten streak in September. Following a 1-0 loss to Rowan on Sept. 30, 1997, JHU went 25-0-1 in its next 26 September games before the defeat to Arcadia. Hopkins sports a 38-3-2 (.907) record in September since 1996, including marks of 7-0 in 1998, 8-0 in 1999, 7-0-1 last season, and 9-1 this year.
Feeling At Home At Homewood: The Blue Jays have given new meaning to the term "home field advantage," delivering a 61-5-3 (.906) record at Homewood Field since 1994. Included in that stretch is a 25-game home winning streak from 1996-98. NSCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Region Rankings for Oct. 8, 2001 Rk School (Nat'l Rank) Record1. Messiah (1) 10-0-0 2.
