A Look Back: Johns Hopkins remained unbeaten in its last seven games (5-0-2) with a win over rival McDaniel and a draw against Muhlenberg.

Four different Blue Jays scored on Wednesday afternoon as JHU shutout visiting McDaniel in the 75th meeting between the two. Sophomore Evan Kleinberg scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 20th minute as he banged home the rebound off a Nick Gauna shot. Junior Matt Mierley made two saves in goals for the shutout.

Saturday’s game with Muhlenberg was a match-up of two of the winningest programs in Centennial Conference history. As befitting the rivalry in which 13 of the previous 24 meetings had been decided by one goal or less, the match ended in a scoreless draw. It was the fifth time in the series that the match had gone to overtime but marked just the second scoreless draw. Mierley posted saves for the Blue Jays for his fifth shutout of the season.

The Week Ahead: Johns Hopkins will have the week to prepare for a crucial Centennial Conference match-up as it travels to Carlisle, PA on Saturday to face Dickinson. Saturday’s match-up will be the 44th meeting between the two. While JHU has the edge in the series (28-12-3), the last five meetings have been tight affairs. The Red Devils stunned the Blue Jays last season, beating Hopkins 2-1 on Homewood Field. It was the first win for Dickinson in Baltimore since the inception of the Centennial Conference and just the second since 1968. Dickinson is just the third Centennial Conference team to beat JHU at Homewood during the regular season since the formation of the conference (F&M-1993, Haverford-1995).

At the Helm: Head coach Craig Appleby is in his first season at Johns Hopkins and carries a 9-2-2 record with the Blue Jays. Appleby came to JHU after spending six seasons as the head coach of Emory & Henry.

Twenty-One: Head coach Craig Appleby boasts a 9-2-2 (.769) record through his first 13 games. He is the first coach since 1987 and just the second ever to boast a win percentage of .700 or better through their first 13 games as head coach.

On the Move: Senior Nick Gauna enters this week tied for eighth in Johns Hopkins history with 78 career points and is three points shy of moving into a tie with Paul Galli for seventh all-time. Gauna is also tied for 15th with 26 career goals and fourth with 26 career assists.

Scott Bukoski is also making his mark on the record book. The sophomore already ranks in the top-15 in career points and goals. He ranks 13th with 68 points and tied for eighth with 29 goals. Last season, he became just the fifth player in program history to score 20 or more goals in one season.

In the Ranks: After going 1-1-0 last week, Johns Hopkins jumped four spots in the NSCAA national poll and are now tied for 19th. The Blue Jays are also ranked third in the Middle Atlantic region.

Home Sweet Home: Historic Homewood Field has been the definition of home field advantage for the Blue Jays, especially in Centennial Conference play. Since the inception of the conference in 1993, Hopkins is 52-3-3 (.922) at home in regular season conference games. In the Centennial Conference Tournament, the Blue Jays are 4-1-3 (.687) at home.

Leading the Way: Sophomore forward Scott Bukoski continues to lead the Centennial Conference in seven of the nine offensive categories, including points (22), goals (9) and game-winning goals (4). Hopkins leads the Centennial Conference in all six team offensive categories, including points (80), goals (29) and assists (22).

Preseason Favorite: The Blue Jays were favored to win their eighth Centennial Conference title in the 2008 Centennial Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. Hopkins picked up 77 points with seven first-place votes. The Blue Jays have been the preseason favorite for six straight years, dating back to the 2003 preseason coaches poll.
