Men's Soccer Weekly Report Sept. 25, 2001
The Team: The Coach: Matt Smith (Towson, `88) is in his ninth year as head coach of the Blue Jays. He is the program's all-time winningest coach, with a 127-28-9 record entering Wednesday's match with Washington College. Smith has led Hopkins to the NCAA Tournament in five of the last seven years, and has guided the Blue Jays to postseason play for seven straight seasons. The Results: Hopkins defeated Western Maryland last Wednesday, 3-0, as Adam Hack (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) notched a goal and an assist. Matthew Doran (Stormville, NY/John Jay) and Daniel Brienza (Farmingville, NY/Sachem) each recorded a goal and an assist in Saturday's 5-0 victory over Ursinus, and Doran had two goals and two assists in a 6-0 win over Alvernia on Monday. On the Offensive: Johns Hopkins has outscored its opponents this season, 35-4. The Blue Jays have amassed 95 points while holding their foes to 10, and have a 179-38 advantage in shots on goal. Goalkeepers Gary Kane, Jr. (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale College) and Nicholas Challen (Soughborough, MA/Algonquin Regional) have combined for six shutouts and have needed to make just 17 saves between them this season. Hack Named To Centennial Honor Roll: After notching two goals and an assist while anchoring a defense that posted two shutouts, Adam Hack was named to the Centennial Conference Honor Roll on Monday. Hack scored a goal and added an assist against Western Maryland, and recorded a goal in the win over Ursinus. Doran Heading West: Matthew Doran is closing in on the Johns Hopkins and Centennial Conference career records for goals and points. All four records are held by Eric West, who played at Hopkins in 1994-97. Doran is second on both JHU lists, he needs 12 goals and 27 points to overtake West on both lists. Centennial Conference Career Goal Leaders Name, School Years No. Eric West, Johns Hopkins 1994-97 72 Matthew Doran, Johns Hopkins 1998- 61 Rich Billings, Haverford 1996-99 61 Brad Getz, Ursinus 1993-95 55 Frank Adamson, Haverford 1994-97 51 Centennial Conference Career Point Leaders Name, School Years No. Eric West, Johns Hopkins 1994-97 172 Rich Billings, Haverford 1996-99 147 Matthew Doran, Johns Hopkins 1998- 146 Frank Adamson, Haverford 1994-97 131 Justin Daniel, Washington 1997-00 123 A Helping Foot: Aerik Williams (Columbus, OH/Columbus Academy) recorded an assist against Alvernia to break Eric West's mark and become the school career assist leader with 29 helpers. Williams is just four assists shy of equaling the conference career record of 33, held by Gregory Stevcic of Gettysburg (1995-97) and Frank Adamson of Haverford (1994-97). Williams needs just one assist to join the duo as the only players in conference history to hand out 30 or more assists in a career. Blue Jays Among Conference Leaders: Prior to Monday's action, Matthew Doran led the conference in assists per game (1.00) and points per game (3.00), and was second in goals per game (1.00). Ryan Kitzen (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) and Chad Tarabolous (Tulsa, OK/Casica Hall) were also in the top 10 in goals per game and points per game. Goalkeeper Gary Kane, Jr. was third in the Centennial with a 0.63 goals against average. As a team, Hopkins led the Centennial in scoring offense (4.14 goals per game) and ranked third in scoring defense (0.57 goals per game). JHU Stellar in September: Hopkins' loss to Arcadia broke the Blue Jays' 26-match unbeaten streak in September. Following a 1-0 loss to Rowan on Sept. 30, 1997, JHU went 25-0-1 in its next 26 September games before the defeat to Arcadia. Hopkins sports a 36-3-2 (.902) record in September since 1996, including marks of 7-0 in 1998, 8-0 in 1999, and 7-0-1 in 2000. Since the Arcadia loss, Hopkins has gone 4-0 and outscored its opponents 19-0. Feeling At Home At Homewood: The Blue Jays have given new meaning to the term "home field advantage," delivering a 60-5-3 (.904) record at Homewood Field since 1994. Included in that stretch is a 25-game home winning streak from 1996-98. Dominating: Hopkins has scored 35 goals this season. Its opponents have recorded 39 shots on goal. Quick Strike Offense: After scoring four goals in a four and a half minute span against Ursinus, the Blue Jays scored three goals in the first 9:13 of the match against Alvernia.
