The Blue Jays fell at home to Arcadia, 3-2, on Thursday before rebounding to post a 5-0 league win on Saturday at Swarthmore. Hopkins will play two matches at Homewood Field this week, hosting Western Maryland on Wednesday at 4 p.m. and Ursinus on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Coach: Matt Smith (Towson, '88) is in his ninth year as head coach of the Blue Jays. He is the program's all-time winningest coach, with a 124-28-9 record entering Wednesday's match with Western Maryland. Smith has led Hopkins to the NCAA Tournament in five of the last seven years. He has guided the Blue Jays to postseason play for seven straight seasons. The Results: Hopkins dropped its first match in 2001 on Thursday, losing to Arcadia, 3-2. Chad Tarabolous (Tulsa, OK/Cascia Hall) put the Blue Jays in front by heading home a corner kick by Aerik Williams (Columbus, OH/Columbus Academy). After the Scarlet Knights took a 2-1 lead, Ryan Kitzen (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) scored from 25 yards out to tie the match. Tarabolous scored two more goals against Swarthmore, and Matthew Doran (Stormville, NY/John Jay) added a goal and an assist. Kitzen scored the other goal for Hopkins, and Ryan Hanley (Hickory, NC/St. Stephens) also recorded an assist. On the Offensive: Johns Hopkins has outscored its three opponents this season 21-4. The Blue Jays have amassed 53 points, while holding their foes to 10, and have a 111-23 advantage in shots on goal. Goalkeepers Gary Kane, Jr. (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale College) and Nicholas Challen (Soughborough, MA/Algonquin Regional) have combined for three shutouts and have needed to make just nine saves between them this season. Tarabolous Named To Centennial Honor Roll: Chad Tarabolous scored three goals in two games last week and was named to the Centennial Conference Honor Roll for this week. Tarabolous scored the first goal of the Arcadia game, and added two more against Swarthmore, including the game-winner. Matthew Doran was named the conference player of the week on September 11. Doran Heading West: Matthew Doran is closing in on the Johns Hopkins and Centennial Conference career records for goals and points. All four records are held by Eric West, who played at Hopkins in 1994-97. Doran is second on both JHU lists, he needs 16 goals and 38 points to overtake West on both lists. Williams needs just one assist to join the duo as the only players in conference history to hand out 30 or more assists in a career. Following a 1-0 loss to Rowan on Sept. 30, 1997, JHU went 25-0-1 in its next 26 September games before the defeat to Arcadia. Hopkins sports a 34-3-2 (.897) record in September since 1996, including marks of 7-0 in 1998, 8-0 in 1999, and 7-0-1 in 2000. Feeling At Home At Homewood: The Blue Jays have given new meaning to the term "home field advantage," delivering a 58-5-3 (.902) record at Homewood Field since 1994.
