Johns Hopkins Men's Soccer Weekly Notes
Sept. 16, 2008
Complete Release in PDF Format A Look Back: Johns Hopkins went 1-1 last week to move to 5-2-0 on the season. Hopkins traveled up I-83 to take on #4 York last Wednesday. It was a back-and-forth affair, but the Spartans goal in the 44th minute proved to be the only goal of the afternoon as the Blue Jays saw their four-game win streak snapped in the 1-0 loss. Junior Matt Mierley posted a career-high seven saves in the game. Hopkins got back in the win column on Saturday with a 4-1 win over visiting Bridgewater. Sophomore Evan Kleinberg broke a 1-1 tie in the 47th minute for the first of three unanswered Blue Jay goals. Senior Robbie Carper paced Hopkins with a goal and an assist. The Week Ahead: Hopkins hits the road on Wednesday for a non-conference match-up with Cabrini. JHU then returns home and opens its Centennial Conference slate against #11 Swarthmore on Saturday. Wednesday’s game will be just the fourth ever meeting between Hopkins and Cabrini and the first since September 28, 2000. The Blue Jays have won all three match-ups with the Cavaliers. Saturday’s game will be the 55th meeting between the Blue Jays and the Garnet. Hopkins holds a slight edge in the series (26-23-5) and has won the last three meetings. At the Helm: Head coach Craig Appleby is in his first season at Johns Hopkins and carries a 5-2-0 record with the Blue Jays. Appleby came to JHU after spending six seasons as the head coach of Emory & Henry. Not Since 1969: Appleby has the best seven-game record (5-2-0) for a first-year head coach at Johns Hopkins since Robert Knauff went 5-1-1 in his first seven games in 1969. Knauff finished his first season with a 6-2-2 (.700) record. Including Appleby, only five coaches in the 74-year history of the program have won five or more in their first seven games as head coach. On the Move: With his goal on Saturday, senior Nick Gauna moved into ninth place in Johns Hopkins history with 75 career points. He is also tied for 14th in career goals (26) and fourth in career assists (23). Leading the Way: Sophomore forward Scott Bukoski leads the Centennial Conference in seven of the nine offensive categories, including goals (6), points (14) and game-winning goals (2). Preseason Favorite: The Blue Jays were favored to win their eighth Centennial Conference title in the 2008 Centennial Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. Hopkins picked up 77 points with seven first-place votes. The Blue Jays have been the preseason favorite for six straight years, dating back to the 2003 preseason coaches poll. Oh Captain, My Captain: Seniors Matty Carlson, Robbie Carper, Ethan Mulligan and Akash Naik will captain the Blue Jays in 2008. For Carlson, it is his third season as a captain for JHU making him the first three-time captain since atleast 1962.
