Sept. 10, 2001

LANCASTER, PA - Johns Hopkins senior forward Matthew Doran (Stormville, NY/John Jay) was named the Centennial Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week, and Blue Jays field hockey player Julia Finkel (Silver Spring, MD/Richard Montgomery) was named co-player of the week, the conference announced Monday.

Doran, who set JHU single-season records in 2000 with 27 goals and 62 points, as well as setting a Division III record by scoring a goal in 15 consecutive matches, leads the 2001 team and the conference with 11 points through three contests.

Doran opened the season with a goal and two assists in a 6-0 win over Buffalo State, and added a goal in the Blue Jays' 3-1 victory over Virginia Wesleyan the following day. This Saturday, Doran scored two goals and added an assist in a 5-0 shutout against King's College.

Finkel, a freshman appearing in her first game at Hopkins, came off the bench to score two goals, including the game-winner, in the Blue Jays' 4-0 conference victory over Haverford. Finkel put Hopkins on the board with her first goal with 12:36 remaining in the first half, and added a second with 9:14 left in the game to close the scoring.

Finkel shared the award with Western Maryland goalkeeper Becky Arnold, who made 19 saves in a 1-0 win over Swarthmore.

Both the Hopkins men's soccer and field hockey teams return to action Wednesday. The men's soccer team hosts Arcadia at 7 p.m., while the field hockey team travels to Salisbury State for a 4:30 p.m. start.
