A LOOK BACK
Johns Hopkins opened the season with back-to-back shutouts to claim the 2010 Blue Jay Classic. On Saturday night, Hopkins opened with a 7-0 win over Buffalo State, before winning a tight 1-0 contest over Catholic on Sunday night.
Six different Blue Jays scored in the win over the Bengals, led by sophomore Brandon Sumpio with his first career multi-goal game. Four players scored their first career goal in a Blue Jay uniform - Sean Coleman, Birin Padam, Jun Park and Danny Reategui - and senior goalie Ravi Gill made one save to earn the shutout.
Against the Cardinals, it was freshman Sam Glassman’s first career goal in the 70th minute that proved to be the difference in the 1-0 win. While Gill made two saves to preserve the shutout.

I’M HONORED
Junior defender Corey Adams was named the Most Valuable Player of the Blue Jay Classic on Sunday night. He anchored a defense that allowed just 11 shots and no goals in two games. He was also named to the Centennial Conference Honor Roll on Monday, along with sophomore midfielder Brandon Sumpio.

THE WEEK AHEAD
This week kicks off a tough stretch for the Blue Jays as they will play six of their next seven games away from the friendly confines of Homewood Field. Hopkins travels up I-83 to take on York College in a battle of two top-10 teams on Wednesday. Hopkins will then visit Rutgers-Camden for the 10th annual Cialella Classic Saturday and Sunday.
Hopkins and York will meet for the 25th time on Wednesday, with the Blue Jays leading the series, 17-4-3. The series began in 1981 and the two teams, separated by just 50 miles, met every year until 2000. During that stretch, Hopkins was 17-1-1 against York. Since the series resumed in 2007, the Blue Jays are just 0-3-2 against the Spartans. In each of those three loses, the game was decided by just one goal. The last two meetings have resulted in scoreless draws.
Hopkins will face New Jersey City on Saturday in game one of the Cialella Classic. It will be the first meeting between the two squads. On Sunday, Hopkins will square off against Rutgers-Camden, in what will also be the first-ever meeting between the two.

IN THE POLLS
In the latest NSCAA Coaches Poll, Hopkins jumped four spots from 10th to sixth. This is the highest the Blue Jays have been ranked since Nov. 9, 2004 when they were second. Hopkins is also tops in this week’s NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Poll.
In a preseason vote of the Centennial Conference Coaches, Hopkins was the favorite to repeat as conference champions. The Blue Jays garnered seven first place votes and 78 total points.

AT THE HELM
Head coach Craig Appleby is now in his third season at the helm of the Blue Jays’ men’s soccer program. In his first two seasons, he led Hopkins to 29 wins, the 2009 Centennial Conference title, and back-to-back NCAA Sweet 16 appearances. In 2008, he became the first coach in Johns Hopkins and Centennial Conference men’s soccer history to guide his team to the NCAA Tournament in his first season. Appleby won more games in his first two seasons than any coach in program history.

CLIMBING THE RANKS
Senior foward Scott Bukoski scored his 45th career goal over the weekend, leaving him alone in fifth place in school history. He also ranks fifth in career points (102) and tied for 17th in career assists (12).
Senior goalie Ravi Gill posted a pair of shututs over the weekend and currently sits alone in fifth place in school history with 15 career shutouts.

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN
Senior defender Kevin Hueber, senior midfielder Evan Kleinberg and junior defender Corey Adams will captain the Blue Jays in 2010.

UP NEXT
Hopkins travels to Cabrini on Wednesday, September 15 before returning to Homewood to host Swarthmore in both teams’ Centennial Conference opener on Saturday, September 18.
