Sept. 3, 2008
Complete Release in PDF Format A Look Back: Johns Hopkins suffered a season-opening loss to Buffalo State, falling 3-0, on Saturday in the Blue Jay Invitational. The Blue Jays outshot the Bengals 12-9, but Bengals' goalie Dan Corti came up with four saves to keep the Jays off the board. On Sunday, Hopkins rebounded with a 1-0 shutout over Penn State Altoona on sophomore Evan Kleinberg's goal in the 23rd minute. Junior Ravi Gill backed that up with two saves in the goal to post the shutout. The Week Ahead: Johns Hopkins wraps up its three-game homestand on Wednesday night when St. Mary's (1-0-1) visits Homewood Field. The Blue Jays are 19-0-0 all-time against the Seahawks, including a 3-0 win last season in St. Mary's City. The Blue Jays then hit the road this weekend for the Kyle Rote, Jr. Invitational, hosted by Sewanee. Hopkins, winners of the invitational in 2007, will take on Birmingham-Southern (1-1-0) on Friday and then host Sewanee (2-0-0) on Sunday. Friday's game will be the first ever meeting between Johns Hopkins and Birmingham-Southern. Meanwhile, Hopkins is 1-0-0 against Sewanee, winning last year's meeting 5-1. Team Notes: Sunday's win over Penn State Altoona was the first for new head coach Craig Appleby at Johns Hopkins. Appleby came to JHU after spending six seasons as the head coach of Emory & Henry. A 1994 graduate of UNC Charlotte, he continued his playing career in the professional ranks for several seasons before hanging up his boots to pursue coaching. The Blue Jays were favored to win their eighth Centennial Conference title in the 2008 Centennial Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. Hopkins picked up 77 points with seven first place votes. The Blue Jays have been the preseason favorite six straight years, dating back to the 2003 preseason coaches poll. Seniors Matty Carlson, Robbie Carper, Ethan Mulligan and Akash Naik will captain the Blue Jays in 2008. For Carlson, it is his third season as a captain for JHU making him the first three-time captain since atleast 1962. Senior Nick Gauna is currently tied for 10th in program history with 72 career points, just two shy of ninth-ranked Greg Cunningham's 74 career points. He is also tied for fourth in career assists with 22.
