The Johns Hopkins men's soccer team was picked to finish first in the Centennial Conference Preseason Poll, the conference announced Tuesday.
The Blue Jays went a perfect 9-0-0 in the conference last season en route to a 15-3-2 overall record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
Hopkins received 81 points and nine of the 10 first place votes in the poll, which was completed by the conference coaches. Gettysburg was selected second with the other first place vote and 69 points. Muhlenberg was picked third with 67 points, followed by Haverford (54), Washington College (46), Franklin & Marshall (43), Western Maryland (42), Dickinson (21), Ursinus (17), and Swarthmore (13).
Seniors Matt Doran (Stormville, NY/John Jay), Ryan Kitzen (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) and Aerik Williams (Columbus, OH/Columbus Academy) return to lead the Blue Jays, who open the 2001 season by hosting the Johns Hopkins Kick-Off Classic on September 1 and 2. Hopkins, led by head coach Matt Smith, who is beginning his ninth season at JHU, will host Buffalo State at 2 p.m. on September 1, and will play Virginia Wesleyan on September 2 at 1 p.m.
