Box Score

CHESTERTOWN, MD - The 18th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's soccer team got goals from four different players as the Blue Jays beat host Washington College, 5-1, on Saturday night. The win, coupled with a tie between Dickinson and Franklin & Marshall, gives Hopkins a first-round bye in next week's Centennial Conference Tournament.

Hopkins got on the board early as freshman Nick White (San Diego, CA/Patrick Henry) buried a loose ball in the box in just the 11th minute for his first career goal. The Shoremen got the equalizer in the 17th minute when Tim Marcin scored off a Gavin Rayburn corner kick. It would be all Blue Jays from there, as Hopkins put four more goals away. Senior Chand Balfour (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 28th minute, when he converted a cross from senior Max Venker (Oldsmar, FL/Palm Harbor University). In the 34th minute, the Blue Jays were the beneficiaries of a Shoremen own goal after Danny Wood attempted to clear a Blue Jay cross.

Coming out of the half, Hopkins needed less than three minutes to push its lead to three. Junior Kevin Hueber (High Bridge, NJ/Voorhees) put on some fancy footwork, dribbling through several Washington defenders before burying his first career goal. Venker closed out the scoring in the 53rd minute with an odd goal. He fired a long shot that hit the Shoremen cross bar, went straight up in the air about 20 feet, bounced in front of the net and in for his third of the season.

Gill made two saves in the goal for the Blue Jays before giving way to freshman Daniel Felder (Montevideo, Uruguay/EIH) in the 83rd minute. For the Shoremen, Chris Phipps made eight saves before being relieved by Tyler Cabot, who made three saves.

Venker's goal and assist on the night give him 21 and 14, respectively for his career. He is now tied for 18th in JHU history in career points, tied for 19th in goals and 15th in assists.

Hopkins five goals are the most in a single-game since a 5-0 win over Ursinus on October 12, 2007. It is also the most goals the Blue Jays have scored against the Shoremen since a 7-0 win on October 9, 2002.

Hopkins returns to action next weekend at the Centennial Conference Tournament. The Blue Jays, seeded third, will take on second-seeded Swarthmore at host Muhlenberg in the semifinals. Hopkins, which is tied with Dickinson in the conference standings with 19 points, earned the number three seed by virtue of its win over Dickinson earlier this season. Details on next weekend's conference tournament will be announced on Monday. Stay tuned to HopkinsSports.com for more information.
