#23 Johns Hopkins and Muhlenberg Battle to Scoreless Draw
Oct. 4, 2008
BALTIMORE, MD - The #23 Johns Hopkins men's soccer team battled visiting Muhlenberg to a scoreless draw on Saturday night in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays move to 9-2-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the conference while the Mules are now 6-3-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the conference. The shots were even at the half with four for each team, though the best chances came early in the half. Senior Matty Carlson (Bristol, CT/Loomis Chaffee) hit the crossbar in the 19th minute and just 32 seconds later, junior Matt Mierley (Weston, FL/St. Thomas Aquinas) tipped a Cody Antonini header over the bar. In the second, Hopkins outshot Muhlenberg 6-3. In the 46th minute, Eric Miller fired a shot that went just high. Sophomore Scott Bukoski (Sagamore, MA/Bourne) then had a breakaway chance in the 62nd minute, but Steven Tenenzapf hustled back and deflected the ball away. Senior Akash Naik (Simpsonville, SC/Hillcrest) had a quality chance in the 77th minute on a header. But Joseph Gogel just tipped it over the crossbar. In the first overtime, the Blue Jays got off three shots early but that would be all for the next 18 minutes as the game ended in a scoreless draw. Mierley finished with two saves for his fifth shutout of the season and the ninth of his career. He now ranks sixth in program history in career shutouts. Gogel posted three saves for his sixth shutout of the season. Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, October 11 as it travels to Carlisle, PA to take on Dickinson. The Centennial Conference showdown is scheduled for a noon start.
