Four Score as #23 Johns Hopkins Shuts Out McDaniel

BALTIMORE, MD - Four different players scored for #23 Johns Hopkins as it shutout visiting McDaniel 4-0 Wednesday afternoon in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays, unbeaten in their last six outings, improve to 9-2-1 overall and 3-0-0 in the conference. The Green Terror fall to 2-6-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the Centennial. Sophomore Evan Kleinberg (South Orange, NJ/Columbia) put Hopkins on the board in the 20th minute with his fifth of the season. Senior Nick Gauna (Evanston, IL/Evanston) dribbled through the McDaniel defense and ripped a shot from the top of the box. Terror goalie Robert Hollasch deflected the ball to his left where Kleinberg ran onto it and one-touched it into the net. The Blue Jays nearly took a two goal lead in the 29th minute when senior Matty Carlson (Bristol, CT/Loomis Chaffee) flicked the ball over Hollasch's head off a corner but defender Donzell Tate was there to head it off the line. Junior Max Venker (Oldsmar, FL/Palm Harbor University) extended Hopkins lead to two in the 38th minute with his fourth of the season. Venker took a shot from the left side, about 25 yards out that was blocked by the Terror. The ball rebounded right back to Venker, who ripped a knuckle-ball shot into the far side of the net. Gauna and senior Akash Naik (Simpsonville, SC/Hillcrest) connected in the 50th minute to give Hopkins a three-goal lead. From the left touchline, Gauna played the ball into the box and Naik headed it home. The Blue Jays closed out the scoring in the 80th minute as sophomore David Drake (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) scored his first of the season. Senior Ethan Mulligan (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) played a long ball over the Green Terror defense, Drake collected the ball, dribbled past the goalie and scored to the far side to make it 4-0.
Junior goalie Matt Mierly (Weston, FL/St. Thomas Aquinas) finished with two saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season and the eighth of his career. Hollasch posted eight saves before being replaced by Michael Radcliffe at 83:38. Radcliffe finished with one save. With his two assists on the day, Gauna now has 78 career points, tying him for eighth in program history. Hopkins returns to action on Saturday when Muhlenberg visits Homewood Field. The Centennial Conference match-up is slated to begin at 7:30 pm. |
