Sept. 1, 2001

BALTIMORE - Johns Hopkins seniors Ryan Kitzen (Massapequa Park NY/Massapequa), Matt Doran (Stormville, NY/John Jay), and Aerik Williams (Columbus, OH/Columbus Academy) combined for four goals and two assists and the 12th-ranked Blue Jays scored three goals in each half in cruising to a 6-0 win over Buffalo St. in the opening round of the Blue Jay Classic. Johns Hopkins (1-0) will take on Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday, while the Bengals will take on St. Mary's (MD).

Doran, who finished second in the nation in goals per game last season, opened the scoring at the 13:30 mark as he stole the ball and beat Bengal goalie Tom Heubsch (Buffalo, NY/St. Joe's) from 18 yards out. Sophomore Ryan Hanley (Hickory, NC/St. Stephens) and Williams both scored in the last 15 minutes of the first half to extend the lead to 3-0 at intermission. Hanley blasted one just under the crossbar off an assist from freshman David Walsh (Chatham, NJ/Chatham), while Williams scored on a direct kick less than a minute before halftime.

Kitzen scored his first two goals of the season in the first 10 minutes of the second half, both off assists from Doran, while freshman Doug Pollock (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) tallied the first goal of his career at the 65-minute mark to close out the scoring.

Freshman Gary Kane (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale College) and junior Nick Challen (Southborough, MA/Algonquin Regional) combined on the shutout in goal for the Blue Jays. Kane played the first 62 minutes and did not register a save, while Challen made one save in 28 minutes of action. Overall, the Blue Jays outshot the Bengals, 22-2 and held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.

In the second game of the day, Christopher Douglass and Curtis Shack each scored a goal and an assist to lead Virginia Wesleyan to a 5-1 win over St. Mary's (Md.).

The classic continues tomorrow, as Virginia Wesleyan will play Johns Hopkins for the title at 1 p.m. and Buffalo State and St. Mary's will battle at 3:30 p.m.
