Blue Jay Jersey Countdown - #46

As we countdown to '13, a season Blue Jay faithful hope will end with a 10 on the 27th, HopkinsSports.com offers its own countdown ... by jersey number ... to the season-opener against Siena on February 8.

Today - #46

Did You Know: Oliver Shephard is the only Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse player to earn First Team All-America honors wearing #46.

Player Spotlight -Oliver Shepard
When discussions about the greatest teams in Johns Hopkins history take place, the 1950 team is often a focal point of the pre-NCAA Tournament teams that accumulated 29 USILA Titles and six ILA Championships. Oliver Shepard captained (along with Jim "Ace" Adams") that 1950 team.

Shepard and his Class of '50 teammates won four USILA Championships, compiled a four-year record of 31-4 and never lost a game to a collegiate opponent.

For his part, Shepard earned All-America honors in each of his last three seasons, including first team honors in 1949. He earned the Turnbull Award as the nation's outstanding attackman as a senior in 1950 and earned a spot on the William C. Schmeisser All-Time Johns Hopkins Team.

Famous "46s" in Other Sports

Andy Pettitte - New York Yankees, Houston Astros (MLB)
In the discussion of great pitchers over the last 20 years, Andy Pettitte's name is often over looked; it shouldn't be. Pettitte counts nearly 250 career wins and more than 2,300 strikeouts to his credit and have been a member of five World Series Championships teams. He has been selected to three All-Star games and is the only MLB pitcher since 1930 to win 12 or more games in the first nine years of his career.

Chuck Muncie - New Orleans Saints, San Diego Chargers (NFL)
Muncie was a key member of the San Diego Chargers' high-octane offenses of the early 1980s. Including his career with the Saints, Muncie rushed for more than 6,700 yards and 71 touchdowns and also totaled more than 2,300 receiving yards in 10 seasons in the NFL.

Note: Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse rosters are generally available back to 1950. In many years after 1950, only an alphabetical list is available. The Blue Jay Jersey Countdown is intended to be an enjoyable way to count down to the 2013 season. It is not intended to rank in any way the players who wore a particular number.
