BALTIMORE, MD -- The Johns Hopkins men’s lacrosse team opened fall practice this morning as head coach Dave Pietramala and assistant coaches Bill Dwan, Bobby Benson and Dave Allan begin preparation for the 2014 season.

Despite losing an experienced 11-man senior class, the Blue Jays welcome back eight players who started three or more games last season, including two on attack (Wells Stanwick, Brandon Benn), four at midfield (Rob Guida, Ryan Brown, Rex Sanders, Holden Cattoni) and two on defense (Jack Reilly, Rob Enright).

The Blue Jays will also return their entire rope unit in SSDMs Phil Castronova and James Malm and LSM Mike Pellegrino.

Stanwick, an Honorable Mention All-American last season, returns after leading the team in points (47) and assists (23), while Benn paced the team in goals for the second consecutive season (34).

Brown is the leading returning scorer at midfield as he scored 17 goals and added four assists as a freshman last season and paced the team with nine extra-man goals. Sanders (13g), Cattoni (6g, 3a) and Guida (3g, 4a) combined for 22 goals and seven assists a year ago despite Guida missing eight games with an injury.

Reilly is the senior member of Pietramala’s defense as he started all 13 games there last season and has played in 45 games with 30 starts in his career. Enright and junior John Kelly combined to play in 25 games with four starts last season and figure to take on increased roles with the departure of four-year regulars Tucker Durkin and Chris Lightner.

Junior Eric Schneider is the most experienced returning goalie on the roster as he played in eight games with one start and posted a 9.59 goals against average a .500 save percentage a year ago. Pietramala and his staff enter the season without a returning starter in goal for the first time since 2008 as Pierce Bassett, who graduated in May, held since the middle of his freshman year.

A key focus for the Blue Jays this fall will be faceoffs as Second Team All-American Mike Poppleton graduated after winning 161-of-235 (.685) attempts last season.

Junior Drew Kennedy has been the team’s number two faceoff specialist during his first two seasons and won 66-of-123 (.537) while backing up Poppleton. There will be no shortage of competition at the X as sophomores Craig Madarasz and Ryan Matthews and figure to push for increased roles.

Welcome to Homewood
When practice started today, Pietramala and his staff got their first chance to work with an incoming freshman class that is ranked sixth by Inside Lacrosse.

In addition to the class ranking sixth, 10 members of the group are ranked in Inside Lacrosse’s Power 100 freshman rankings. Below is a list of the 10 that appear in rankings with their ranking listed.

Seven Former Blue Jays Among 52 Team USA Hopefuls
Johns Hopkins head coach Dave Pietramala spent Labor Day weekend serving in his other role - as an assistant coach with Team USA.

More than 90 players were invited to tryout for the team, which will represent the United States in the 2014 FIL World Championships in Denver, Colorado. From that group of hopefuls, 52 were selected to move into the next round after the initial tryouts at Goucher College from Aug. 30 – Sept 1.

These players will train with Team USA at a series of fall and winter events, culminating with Champion Challenge, a US Lacrosse event, where players will vie for 23 spots on the final world championships roster.

Among the 52 who made the initial cut are seven former members of the Johns Hopkins men’s lacrosse team, all of which played for Pietramala at JHU. Below is a list of the seven former Hopkins standouts who will continue on in their quest to represent the United States next summer:

Tucker Durkin '13 (D)
Michael Evans '09 (D)
Kyle Harrison '05 (M)
Stephen Peyser '08 (DM)
Mike Poppleton '13 (FO)
Paul Rabil '08 (M)
