July 5, 2008
BALTIMORE, MD -- Matt Dolente and Tim Donovan, who both recently completed their freshman year on the Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team, have helped Team USA to a pair of victories in the first two days at the International Lacrosse Federation Under-19 World Championship in British Columbia, Canada. The Americans opened with a 20-15 win over the Iroquois Nationals on Thursday (July 3) and followed with a 21-7 victory over Australia on Friday (July 4).
The victories lift the Americans to a perfect 31-0 in U-19 international play since the first championship in 1988.
Donovan scored a pair of first-half goals in the win over Iroquois, while Dolente took all but one faceoff for the U.S. and won 23-of-37 (.621). Donovan's two first-half goals helped the United States to a 10-8 halftime lead.
A dominating third quarter helped the Americans ease past Australia as the red, white and blue out-scored the Aussies 8-0 in the period. Dolente was again dominant at the X as he won 17-of-24 faceoffs, while Donovan added a goal in the victory.
The U.S. returns to action on Saturday, July 5 with a 12:45 pm (EST) game against Japan. The Japanese dropped their first two games of the tournament, which continues with pool play through Monday (July 7). The semifinals are schedule for Thursday, July 10 with the championship and consolation games slated for Saturday, July 12.
