A Quick Recap: The Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team posted a 9-5 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2006. The Blue Jays stood at 5-4 after a loss to Maryland, but rallied with four straight wins before dropping a heart-breaker (13-12) to Syracuse in the NCAA Tournament.

These are the Facts: Johns Hopkins concluded the 2006 season with an all-time record of 858-268-15 (.759). The Blue Jays own eight NCAA Championships, 29 USILA titles and six ILA titles for a total of 43 national championships.

Pietramala Closes Sixth Season: Dave Pietramala recently completed his sixth season as the head coach at Johns Hopkins. He sports a 72-15 (.828) record as the head coach at Hopkins and an overall coaching record of 95-32 (.748) in nine seasons (includes three seasons as the head coach at Cornell (1998-2000)).

Pietramala Among Hopkins Coaching Leaders: Dave Pietramala will enter the 2007 season ranked fifth on the all-time victories list (72) and the all-time winning percentage list (.828) among JHU coaches who coached 25 or more games at Homewood. He could move as high as third on the career victories list next season as he needs just two wins to pass Don Zimmerman (1984-90) on the list and six to pass Tony Seaman (1991-98).

Pietramala Stands Alone: Johns Hopkins head coach Dave Pietramala is the only person in lacrosse history who has won an NCAA Division I Championship as a player (1987) and a head coach (2005). He is also the only person who has been named the national player of the year and the national coach of the year.

35 in a Row: This year's NCAA Tournament bid was the 35th straight for Johns Hopkins, which missed the inaugural NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Tournament in 1971, but has qualified for every one since (see page 2 sidebar for more information).

10 in a Row: The Blue Jays drew the number four seed in this year's NCAA Tournament. This marked the 10th consecutive year Johns Hopkins has been seeded in the top four in the tournament. By comparison, only two other schools (Syracuse & Georgetown) have even qualified for the tournament in each of the last 10 years.

34-of-35: With the 13-3 win over Penn in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Johns Hopkins moved into the quarterfinal round of the NCAAs for the 34th time in 35 trips to the tournament.

Finishing Strong in May: Johns Hopkins boasts an 18-5 all-time record under head coach Dave Pietramala in games played in the month of May. The Blue Jays have won 11 of their last 13 and 15 of their last 18 games in the month of May under Pietramala. Johns Hopkins is 10-0 at home in the month of May under Pietramala and the Blue Jays last lost a home game in the month of May on May 2, 1992 (Towson/14-13). Since then the Blue Jays have won 18 straight games at home in the month of May.

April Reign: Johns Hopkins is 28-2 in games played in the month of April under head coach Dave Pietramala. Taking it back even farther the Blue Jays are 52-2 in the month of April since the start of the 1997 season and the Blue Jays' loss to Maryland on April 15th of this season was JHU's first home loss in the month of April since 1996.

March Madness: Since head coach Dave Pietramala arrived for the 2001 season the Blue Jays have compiled a 24-8 record in the month of March. Playing a brutal early-season schedule that has included regular games against Princeton, Syracuse and Virginia the Blue Jays have compiled a 16-2 record at home under Pietramala in games played in the month of March.

Fresh Faces: A year ago the Blue Jays had three seniors start every game and another started all but one. In addition, six other seniors played in at least 11 games. This season there were just three seniors who played in all 14 games and just one other who played in more than 10. Among the top 17 players on the depth chart for most of the season, six were freshmen, three were sophomores and five were juniors.

Youth Gone Wild: Johns Hopkins amassed a total of 138 goals and 69 assists during the 2006 season. Of those totals, 125 of the 138 goals (90.6%) were scored by non-seniors and 55 of the 69 assists (79.7%) belong to players who will return in 2007 as well. Greg Peyser (13g, 14a) was the only senior who registered a point for the Blue Jays this season.

Seniors Rank Third in All-Time Wins: The eight senior members of the Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team became just the eighth class in school history to amass 50 or more wins when JHU knocked off Towson and closed their careers with an all-time record of 52-9 (.852) at Hopkins. There are just two classes that compiled more victories than the class of 2006 (2005, 1981) and only one class (2005) played as many games as this year's group.

Streaking: Johns Hopkins is 56-7 in its last 63 regular season games dating back to the end of the 2001 season and 64-11 overall since the start of the 2002 season.

One-Goal Turnarounds: JHU is 24-5 in one-goal games under head coach Dave Pietramala and the Blue Jays have won 11 of their last 12 and 15 of their last 17 one-goal games. In its previous 29 one-goal games (covering a span from an 11-10 loss to Virginia in the 1988 NCAA Quarterfinals through the 2000 season), Hopkins was 15-14.

More One-Goal Notes: The Blue Jays have come from behind to win 10 times during their last 11 one-goal wins. In seven of those 10 come-from-behind one-goal wins the Blue Jays have come back from a deficit of two goals or more.

There's a First Time for Everything: The season-ending wins over Navy (9-8), Towson (11-10) and Loyola (7-6/OT) mark the first time in school history that Johns Hopkins has won three consecutive games by one goal.

Overtime Notes: Including the victory over Loyola, the Blue Jays are 10-2 in overtime under head coach Dave Pietramala and have currently won six straight overtime games. Players on the 2006 team who scored game-winning goals in overtime:

• Senior Greg Peyser notched the decisive goal in OT against Syracuse in 2005.
• Sophomore Kevin Huntley punched home the game-winner in the second OT against Duke in 2005.
• Freshman Brian Christopher scored 1:22 into OT against Loyola on May 6.

Extra-Man Offense Among Nation's Best: Johns Hopkins finished ninth in the nation in extra-man offense as the Blue Jays converted on 18-of-46 (.391) opportunities on the year. A trio of sophomores - Kevin Huntley, Michael Doneger and Paul Rabil - all scored four extra-man goals on the year. Players who combined to score 16 of JHU's 18 extra-man goals are due to return in 2007. Johns Hopkins has finished in the top 10 in the nation in extra-man offense four times in the last five years (2002-T4th, 2003-1st, 2004-5th).

Faceoffs A Key: While there is never just one reason a team wins a game, the late-season success of the Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team can be traced, at least somewhat, to its success on faceoffs. The Blue Jays won 13-of-21 (.613) faceoffs against Navy, 14-of-24 (.583) against Towson and 11-of-17 (.647) against Loyola. The Blue Jays closed the season by winning 21-of-29 (.724) in the NCAA Quarterfinals against Syracuse. Johns Hopkins finished the season ranked fourth in the nation in faceoff winning percentage (.608) as JHU won 183-of-301 on the year. Johns Hopkins has finished among the top seven in the nation in faceoff winning percentage in each of the last five years.
