Lowe's Newsletter Profiling Paul Rabil Get Acrobat Reader

KANSAS CITY, MO - Johns Hopkins senior midfielder Paul Rabil (Gaithersburg, MD/DeMatha) is one of 10 finalists for the 2008 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in men's lacrosse it was recently announced. The 10 finalists were choosen from a list of 20 candidates based on personal qualities that define a complete student athlete. These four primary areas of criteria include: classroom, character, community and competition.

In addition to Rabil, the 2008 finalists include: Michael Corbolotti, Cornell University, Fletcher Gregory, University of North Carolina, Pat Grimm, Yale University, Mike Leveille, Syracuse University, Craig Massie, Army, Danny Nathan, Cornell University, Brad Ross, Duke University, Ben Rubeor, University of Virginia and Tom Scherr, University of Delaware.

These ten names were placed on the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award men's lacrosse ballot for a nationwide vote beginning April 3 and concluding May 5. Fan balloting, available on the award's official website www.seniorclassaward.com, will be combined with votes from coaches, media and sponsors to determine the recipient of the award.

"These ten players are not only among the nation's best college lacrosse players, they are remarkable students and community members who have worked hard to accomplish great things both on and off the field," said Bob Gfeller, Lowe's Senior Vice President of Marketing and Advertising. "Lowe's is proud of its affiliation with the NCAA and college athletics, and we are pleased to help honor these individuals who have displayed a commitment to excellence as true student-athletes."

A co-captain on this year's team and a Third Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American a year ago, Rabil carries a 3.49 cumulative grade point average and will graduate in May with a degree in political science and a minor in entrepreneurship and management. In addition, he has been active with the Blue Jays' Holiday Magic program and has completed a pair of internships over the last two summers.

On the field, Rabil was named a First Team All-American in each of the last two years and earned the McLaughlin Award as the nation's top midfielder a year ago as well. A finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy as the nation's top player in 2007, Rabil has career totals of 88 goals and 60 assists for 148 points. He was the national scoring leader among midfielders a year ago with 27 goals and 26 assists for 53 points needs just two points to become the second midfielder in school history to amass 150 career points. He has helped guide Johns Hopkins to a record of 42-14 and two national championships during his career.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the award was launched in 2001 to honor the attributes of college basketball seniors who fulfill their entire athletic eligibility and pursue the many rewards of a senior season and complete college education. Since that time, Lowe's, an official corporate partner of the NCAA, has expanded the award to include other NCAA sports and the award has developed into the nation's premier tribute to college seniors.

This marks the second year for the men's lacrosse division of the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. Cornell goaltender Matt McMonagle was the inaugural winner in 2007. The 2008 award winner will be announced and presented with the prestigious Lowe's Senior CLASS Award trophy during festivities surrounding the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championships, scheduled for May 24-26. The Lowe's All-Senior All-America Team, based on final results of the balloting, will also be recognized.

The idea of an award to salute collegiate seniors was conceived by sportscaster Dick Enberg, who continues to serve as Honorary Chairman. It was inspired by the trend of college basketball players leaving college early to turn professional. The Senior CLASS Award was formed to honor senior student-athletes who fulfill their entire collegiate athletic eligibility, earn a college degree and give back to their community. Lowe's, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, extended the award in 2007 to include six other NCAA sports: men's ice hockey, men's lacrosse, baseball, softball, men's soccer and women's soccer.
