Blue Jay Jersey Countdown - #36

As we countdown to ’13, a season Blue Jay faithful hope will end with a 10 on the 27th, HopkinsSports.com offers its own countdown … by jersey number … to the season-opener against Siena on February 8.

Today - #36

Did You Know: There is no record of a Johns Hopkins player earning All-America honors while wearing #36.

Player Spotlight – None
As indicated below, there are some years where the only information available in a team roster is an alphabetical listing without numbers included. The #36 appears to have been worn less frequently by a member of the Johns Hopkins men’s lacrosse team than virtually every other number under 40.

In addition, the #36 has often been worn by players in only one or two of their seasons before switching to another number.

Famous “36s” in Other Sports
Robin Roberts –Several Teams (MLB)
Roberts starred for the Phillies during a career than spanned 1948-66. His career bests included 28 wins, 198 strikeouts, 346.2 innings pitched, a 2.59 ERA and 33 complete games. That’s 28 wins, 346.2 innings pitched and 33 complete games … in a single season. At one time he pitched 28 consecutive complete games.

Roberts won 286 games with a 3.41 ERA and more than 2,350 strikeouts on the mound and was equally effective at the plate. He amassed 55 doubles, 10 triples, five home runs and 103 RBIs as one of the top hitting pitchers of any era.

Jerome Bettis – Rams, Steelers (NFL)
The folks in Baltimore won’t be happy with this selection, but Bettis was a one-man wrecking crew as a running back. He earned six Pro Bowl selections, three All-Pro nods and rushed for more than 13,600 yards and 94 touchdowns during his career in the regular season. He was the NFL Rookie of the Year in 1993 and helped the Steelers win Super Bowl XL.

Note: Johns Hopkins men’s lacrosse rosters are generally available back to 1950. In many years after 1950, only an alphabetical list is available. The Blue Jay Jersey Countdown is intended to be an enjoyable way to count down to the 2013 season. It is not intended to rank in any way the players who wore a particular number.
