Johns Hopkins Postgame Notes

Today was the first meeting between Navy and Johns Hopkins in the NCAA Tournament.

The Blue Jays are 28-8 in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament and 63-27 in all NCAA Tournament games.

Johns Hopkins now holds a 35-game winning streak over Navy, a span that started May 10, 1975.

Paul Rabil's first period goal gave him 39 career NCAA Tournament points (12 games) to tie the Johns Hopkins NCAA Tournament points record (Brian Wood, 1983-86). His assist on Steven Boyle's second period goal broke the school's tournament points record and tied the school's NCAA Tournament assist record with 21 (Kevin Boland, 2001-04).

Rabil added two goals during the second half to give him eight multiple-goal games this year and six games with at least three goals. He has totaled eight points (7-1=8) in the two rounds of the 2008 NCAA Tournament.

Rabil moved into a tie for eighth place on the Johns Hopkins career goal scoring list with 104 career goals (Dan Denihan, 1996-97, 1999-00).

Kevin Huntley's two goals today gives him nine multiple-goal games this year. He also moved into a tie for 10th place on the Johns Hopkins career goal scoring list with 103 goals (Jack Thomas, 1972-74).

Steven Boyle tied a season high with three goals today. It also was his sixth multiple goal game of the season and the second time he had scored three goals.

Johns Hopkins held Navy scoreless for 33:12 from 54 seconds left in the third quarter to 12:42 left in the fourth quarter. The Blue Jays outscored the Mids 6-0 during this span. Johns Hopkins has held opponents scoreless for over 20 minutes 11 times this year and for over 30 minutes four times.

Including today, Johns Hopkins has outscored opponents 27-7 in the third period of the last seven games (7-0 record during this time).

The Johns Hopkins senior class improved to 10-0 in their careers in games played in front of 10,000 fans or more. Rabil has scored 16 points and dished out 16 assists in those games.

Johns Hopkins improved to 39-2 against teams from the state of Maryland under head coach Dave Pietramala.

The Blue Jays are now 26-5 under Pietramala in May and are a combined 62-9 in April and May during his tenure.

Navy Postgame Notes

Today's attendance of 17,017 is a new NCAA Quarterfinal record, breaking the previous standard of 12,289 set by Hofstra in 1999 (Duke, Georgetown, Hofstra, Navy).

Today was the first meeting between Navy and Johns Hopkins in the NCAA Tournament.

The Midshipmen are 8-11 in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament and 16-25 in all NCAA Tournament games.

The first quarter goals by Johns Hopkins' Steven Boyle (59 seconds) and Navy's Mikelis Visgauss (54 seconds) is tied for the third-shortest span between goals by opposing teams in NCAA history. The record is three seconds (Nick Silva, Manhattan; Matt Alrich, Delaware; March 9, 2003).

Mikelis Visgauss was 6-of-6 on faceoffs in the first period and won his first seven facesoffs of the game. He improved to 9-of-10 on faceoffs before ending the day 10-of-16. The 10 wins was one shy of tying his career high for wins in a single game.

Visgauss' goal in the first period was his second of the season and tied his career high.

Navy's four goals scored today tied a season low (Bucknell, W, 4-3).

Navy's four goals scored is the fewest for the Mids in an NCAA Tournament game since losing 9-3 to Yale in 1993.

The Mids allowed 10 or more goals for the fourth time in the last seven games (2-5 during this span). Prior to this stretch, the Mids had not allowed 10 goals in any of Navy's opening nine games of the year (8-1).

Michael Beggins' first period goal was his fourth of the season and first since he scored two goals against Mount St. Mary's (Feb. 29).

Navy's leading goal scorer Tim Paul (26) did not score a goal today to end a five-game stretch in which he had tallied at least one goal.

Nick Mirabito tallied one goal today, the fifth-straight game in which he had scored a goal. He ends his career ranked sixth at Navy in career goals (96) and seventh in career points (158).

Navy held advantages over Johns Hopkins of 28-20 on ground balls and 35-23 on shots.

Both teams turned the ball over 22 times in the game.
