BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins senior wide receiver Evan Earnest (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Football First Team it was announced Thursday. Earnest is the fourth football player in school history to earn First Team Academic All-America honors (the four have combined for five total selections) and his selection marks the 10th national Academic All-American for the Johns Hopkins football program. Eight of the 10 selections, including four of the five first team picks, have come under the guidance of current head coach Jim Margraff. Earnest was the only player from the Centennial Conference named to the team.

Earnest is a member of Pi Tau Sigma (Mechanical Engineering Honor Society) and has completed an internship with Whitman, Requart and Associates. He has written a computer program that calculates the strain in micro-sample tests using an Inferrometric strain displacement gage or (ISDG) and worked in a lab last summer doing tests to determine the material properties of gold and platinum thin film. He is majoring in mechanical engineering and sports a 3.74 cumulative GPA.

Earnest enjoyed the finest season of his career in 2006 as he had a personal-best 43 receptions for 470 yards and four touchdowns. He also led the team in punt returns (31-180) and all-purpose yards (849) and is averaged a team-high 25.2 yards per kickoff return. He finished fourth in the Centennial Conference in receptions per game (4.3), fifth in all-purpose yards per game (84.9) and sixth in receiving yards per game (47.0).

A Second Team All-Centennial selection as a senior, Earnest closed his career ranked third in school history in punt return yards (449) and ninth in kickoff return yards (627). He also totaled 732 receiving yards and 1,794 all-purpose yards and was named to the 2006 Centennial Conference Football Academic Honor Roll.

The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) selects Academic All-America teams in 12 programs: football, women's volleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's track & field/cross country, women's track & field/cross country, men's at-large and women's at-large. A first team, second team and third team are selected in both the University (Division I and I-AA) and College (Division II, III and NAIA) Divisions. Football consists of just first and second teams. ESPN The Magazine is the official sponsor of CoSIDA's Academic All-America program.
