Box Score

BETHLEHEM, PA - Host Moravian outscored visiting Johns Hopkins 16-0 after halftime and turned five Blue Jay turnovers into 13 points as the Greyhounds picked up a 33-10 victory at Rocco Calvo Stadium Saturday afternoon. The win improves Moravian's record to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial Conference. The Blue Jays had their four-game winning streak, which extended back to last season, snapped and fall to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial.

It took just 12 seconds for the Greyhounds to capitalize on the first of Hopkins' five turnovers as freshman Nick Fazio fumbled the opening kickoff and Moravian's David Wacker recovered at the Blue Jay 22-yard line. Tyler McCambridge darted around the left end and raced untouched into the end zone on the first play from scrimmage to give the `Hounds a 7-0 lead. As it turned out, they never surrendered the lead.

Hopkins moved the ball out towards midfield on its ensuing possession and punted the `Hounds deep in their own end, but senior Marc Braxmeier found McCambridge on a deep out on third down and McCambridge raced to the end zone with an 81-yard touchdown reception to make it 14-0 just over five minutes into the game.

The Blue Jays sliced the 14-point deficit in half with a nine-play, 45-yard drive that was capped by a 14-yard touchdown pass from freshman Hewitt Tomlin to sophomore D.J. Hartigan. The Hopkins defense forced a quick punt on Moravian's ensuing possession, but Tomlin fumbled the ball away while being sacked on JHU's first play and the Greyhounds got a 22-yard field goal from Brian Reckenbeil five plays later to push the lead to 17-7. It was the first of Reckenbeil's school-record four field goals in the game.

Behind the shifty running of freshman Lyndon O'Conner, Hopkins pieced together its best drive of the game to pull within a touchdown after Reckenbeil's field goal. O'Connor rushed for 30 yards on the drive and added a reception for seven more before Alex Lachman nailed a 34-yard field goal with 10 minutes remaining to make it 17-10.

The Blue Jays twice had chances to cut further into the deficit in the final seven minutes of the first half, but an interception by Erik Brinkerhoff deep in Moravian territory killed one drive and Hopkins' final play of the half ended at the Greyhound 15-yard line as time expired to account for the 17-10 halftime score. The Blue Jays had moved from their own 18 to the Moravian 15 before running out of time.

Reckenbeil added another field goal in the third quarter and two more in the fourth before Tyler deRouen capped the victory with a 12-yard touchdown run with 1:15 remaining.

Moravian was held more than 100 yards below its rushing average as deRouen and McCambridge rushed for 70 and 64 yards, respectively, to fuel a ground game that punched up 164 yards on 45 attempts. Braxmeier was 10-of-21 for 182 yards with the one touchdown and McCambridge had three receptions for 90 yards and the one score.

Johns Hopkins got a game-high 117 yards rushing from junior Andrew Kase - his 10th career 100-yard rushing game - and Tomlin was 24-of-42 for 201 yards with the one touchdown and two interceptions. Tucker Michels had a game-high seven receptions for 58 yards and totaled 131 all-purpose yards. Johns Hopkins held a 393-346 advantage in total offense, but the five turnovers were more than the Blue Jays could overcome.

Johns Hopkins will return to action next Saturday when the Blue Jays host defending Centennial Conference Champion Muhlenberg.
