Returning for his third season on Jim Margraff's staff and first as the team's running backs coach is Luke Ewalt. Ewalt, who spent the last two years as the team's quarterbacks coach, came to Johns Hopkins after serving as the quarterbacks coach at Jacksonville University (FL) in 2003 and 2004.
Ewalt worked closely with Second Team All-Centennial quarterback Zach DiIonno in 2005, when the Blue Jays won the Centennial Conference title and made their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Playoffs.
Injuries took their toll on the Blue Jay quarterbacks last season as three different players started at the position. Still, Ewalt helped develop a solid passing game that produced nearly 160 yards per game. Current sophomore Michael Murray started three games and threw for over 700 yards, the most by a JHU freshman quarterback since 1990.
Ewalt, a 2003 graduate of Jacksonville, joined the staff at his alma mater as a student in 2001. After gaining hands-on experience in all areas as an undergraduate he was offered a position as the wide receivers coach.
During the 2002 season he coached All-America wide receiver Jon Turner and accepted a position as the team's quarterbacks coach the following spring.
In his two seasons as the quarterbacks coach at Jacksonville he helped implement a no-huddle offense that led to the team setting numerous school records. His quarterbacks set school career records for passing yards and touchdown passes.
Ewalt earned a bachelor's degree in communications. He was honored as the top communications student in the sophomore class and later pioneered the development of the Florida Public Relations Association at Jacksonville University.
