Evanston, IL - The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team won three duals and dropped two Friday on the first day of the Northwestern Duals.

The Blue Jays began the day with a 23-4 loss to Notre Dame, but rebounded to defeat the host Wildcats, 19-8. Hopkins then topped Detroit-Mercy, 24-3, and Cleveland State, 22-5, before falling to North Carolina, 18-9.

Freshman Nick Marchuk (Ringoes, NJ/The Hun School at Princeton) led the Blue Jays in the foil with an 11-2 mark, while junior Bryan Bishe' (Glen Ridge, NJ/Montclair Kimberley) went 7-4. Senior Mark Riso (Jupiter, FL/The Benjamin School) finished the day 4-5, and junior Marcos Kuroki (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Escala Maria Imaculada) compiled a 2-3 record.

Senior Matt Bouloubasis (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park) paced the Hopkins epee squad with a 9-3 record, including a 3-0 mark against North Carolina. Junior John Majewski (Wrentham, MA/King Philip Regional) went 8-5 in the epee, while freshman Nic Palar (Larchmont, NY/Mamaroneck) was 2-4 and sophomore James Thomas (Wilton, CT/Hopkins School) finished the day with a 2-6 record.
 

 

Sophomore Jason Park (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Ramapo) went 7-6 in the sabre for the Blue Jays, while junior Fred Lee (Garland, TX/North Garland) finished 5-8. Sophomore Ken Park (Oradeil, NJ/Phillips Exeter Academy) went 2-11 on the day in the sabre.

The Northwestern Duals continue Saturday and Sunday.
