The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team opened its 2001-02 campaign with three wins Sunday afternoon in the White Athletic Center. The Blue Jays defeated Virginia Tech, 18-9, St. Johns (MD), 21-6, and Yeshiva, 22-5.
Brian Bishe (Glen Ridge, NJ/Montclair Kimberley Academy) went a perfect 8-0 in his duals to lead Hopkins in the foil, while Matt Bouloubasis (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park) went 8-0 in the epee. Dan Rosenthal (Chevy Chase, MD/Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School) went 7-1 in the foil, while Ryan Schwerzmann (Watertown, NY/Watertown) led the Blue Jays in the sabre with a 7-2 record.
Other top performers for Hopkins were Daniel Frank (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck), who went 6-2 in the foil, and Alex Sinofsky (Montclair, NJ/Montclair), who went 6-2 in the epee. Sampreet Niyogi (Voorhees, NJ/The Lawrenceville School) had a 6-3 record in the sabre.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday when the Blue Jays compete in the Tufts Invitational in Medford, MA.
