PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team had its first dual meets of the season last weekend at Penn and Stevens Tech. The Blue Jays went 6-1 on the weekend, with their only loss coming to the Penn Quakers. Hopkins earned wins over Hunter, Rutgers, Yeshiva, NJIT, Stevens Tech and Sacred Heart.
Against Penn, the Quakers won in the Sabre (9-0) and the Epee (6-3) while Hopkins won in the Foil (5-4). Junior David Ferguson (New York, NY/Stuyvesant) led the way in the Foil, winning both of his bouts. Against Stevens Tech, the Blue Jays took the Epee (7-2) and the Sabre (7-2), while the Ducks took the Foil (5-4). Freshmen Nick Krywopusk (Richboro, PA/Princeton Day School (NJ)) and Max Wieder (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) went 3-0 in the Epee and Sabre respectively. Hopkins got big wins in the Epee (6-3) and the Sabre (7-2) along with a 5-4 in the Foil to defeat Sacred Heart 18-9. Wieder and sophomore Harry Oppenheim (Weston, FL/University School of NSU) each went 3-0 in their respective weapons to lead the Blue Jays.
On Sunday, Hopkins swept all four of its opponents. Wins in the Foil (8-1) and the Epee (9-0) propelled the Blue Jays to a 20-7 win over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. In the Foil, Fergurson and juniors Ben Dorfman (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon) and Jimmy Einsiedler (Falmouth, ME/Waynflete School) each went 2-0. And in the Epee, Oppenheim, Krywopusk and freshman Thomas Ronan (New Haven, CT/Pinkerton Academy (NH)) each went 3-0.
Hopkins lost just one bout in defeating Yeshiva 26-1. Dorfman and sophomore
Ian McCue (Yardley, PA/Princeton Day School) each went 3-0 in their bouts in the Foil (9-0). In the Sabre, senior
Aaron Fernandes (Short Hills, NJ/Millburn), Wieder and freshman
Michael Fellows (Beverly, MA/St. John's Prep) all went 3-0. And in the Epee, Ronan led the way with a 3-0 record.
Against NJIT, Hopkins again lost just one bout in a 26-1win. Sophomore Paul Nunley (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) and Ferguson led the way in the Foil with three wins apiece. Once again in the Sabre, Fernandes, Wieder and Fellows all went 3-0. Krywopusk and sophomore James Pearse (Concord, MA/Concord Carlisle) led the Blue Jays in the Epee, winning all three of their bouts.
Hopkins swept all nine bouts in the Foil and the Sabre, while losing just two in the Epee against Hunter. McCue and Ferguson went 3-0 in the Foil, while Wieder, Fernandes and Fellows went a combined 9-0 in the Sabre. In the Epee, it was Krywopusk and Pearse leading the way with 3-0 records.
In all, nine Blue Jays posted double-digit win totals over the weekend. Weider led the way with 16 wins, while Ferguson posted 15 wins. Hopkins is now done for the remainder of the calendar year and will return to action on January 12 at the Philadelphia Invitational.
