STATE COLLEGE, PA - The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team continued its strong 2006-07 schedule at the Penn State Open last Sunday. Leading the way for Hopkins was senior Nick Marchuk (Ringoes, NJ/The Hun School) with an 18th place finish (of 63) in the Foil.

Marchuk, seeded 23rd heading into the opening round, went 3-of-5 in the first round of pool play. In the second round, he went 3-of-4 to move up the No.16 spot heading into the third round. In the third round, Marchuk went 1-of-5 to finish 18th. Sophomore David Ferguson (New York, NY/Stuyvesant) was seeded eighth heading into the first round. He won all five of his bouts in the first round of pool play. In the second round, Ferguson went 2-of-4 and then 0-of-5 in the third round. He finished in 23rd place. Sophomore Ben Dorfman (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon) was also seeded 23rd heading into the first round of competition. He won two of his five bouts in the first round and two of four in the second round. In the third round he won one of five bouts and finished 22nd.

In the Sabre, sophomore Matt Ferg (New Orleans, LA/Benjamin Franklin) went 0-of-5 in the first round of pool play. Sophomore David Hill (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) won one of his five bouts. In the Epee, sophomore Dan Zielinski (Bernardville, NJ/¬¬Bernardville) was seeded 15th heading into the first round. He won three of his five bouts in the opening round. In the second, he won one of four and finished 35th. Sophomore Dane Schiro (Hagerstown, MD/Hagerstown) and freshmen James Pearse (Concord, MA/Concord Carlisle) and Harry Oppenheim (Weston, FL/University School of NSU) each won one of their bouts in the opening round.
