MADISON, NJ - The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team (22-12) concluded its season at the 2009 NCAA Mid-Atlantic South Regionals hosted by Drew University on March 7. The Blue Jays top finisher on the day was senior Ben Dorfman (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon) who placed 10th in the Foil. While sophomore Max Wieder (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) broke the school single-season wins record in the Sabre.
Dorfman went 9-11 on the day to finish 10th in the Foil, the highest ranked Division III fencer. Dorfman finished the day with 229 career Foil wins and 241 total wins. He ranks 13th all-time in school history in wins (all weapons) and seventh in the Foil. Senior David Ferguson (New York, NY/Stuyvesant) went 5-5 on the day to place 15th, making Hopkins the only Division III school with fencers in the top 15 in the Foil. Ferguson finished his career ranked eighth all-time in school history with 266 total wins. He also ranks fourth in the Foil with 262 career wins. Junior Paul Nunley (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) placed 20th after winning two of five bouts and senior Jimmy Einsiedler (Falmouth, ME/Waynflete School) also went 2-3 to finish 24th. Einsiedler is now tied for 28th all-time in wins (all weapons) and tied for 12th in the Foil (191).
In the Epee, sophomore Nick Krywopusk (Richboro, PA/Princeton Day School (NJ)) was the Blue Jays' top finisher, placing 15th with a 4-6 record on the day. He finished the season with a 74-49 record to lead the Blue Jays. Junior Harry Oppenheim (Weston, FL/University School of NSU) went 1-4 on the day to finish in 22nd place. He finished the season with 73 wins and 156 career wins. Sophomore Thomas Ronan (New Haven, CT/Pinkerton Academy (NH)) placed 26th with a 2-3 mark, while junior Ian McCue (Yardley, PA/Princeton Day School) finished in 29th place.
And in the Sabre, Wieder won just one of his five bouts on the day, but that one win gave him 106 for the season to break the school record for wins in the Sabre. John Roberts record of 105 wins had stood since 1975. In fact, Wieder is just the fourth Sabrist in program history to eclipse the 100-win mark. After just two seasons, Wieder has accumulated 196 career wins, tied for 10th in school history in Sabre wins.
