March 6, 2006

DURHAM, NC - A pair of freshmen led the Johns Hopkins men's fencing team at the 2006 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Fencing Regional Championships this past weekend. Dan Zielinski (Bernardsville, NJ/Bernards) and Jimmy Einsiedler (Falmouth, ME/Waynflete) both automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships with top-seven finishes in their respective weapons.

Einsiedler, who was one of four Blue Jays competing in the Foil, was seeded 32nd heading into the regional championships. He finished sixth, which is the first top-10 finish in the Foil for the Jays since the 2002 regional championships. The top seven finishers in the Foil automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships. Freshman Ben Dorfman (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon) finished 14th followed by junior Nick Marchuk (Ringoes, NJ/The Hun School) in 15th place. Freshman David Ferguson (New York, NY/Stuyvesant) finished in 20th.

In the Epee, Zielinski was the top finisher for the Jays. Seeded eighth heading into the competition, he finished fifth. It was the best finish in the Epee for the Jays since Matt Bouloubasis '04 finished third at the 2004 NCAA Regionals. Freshman Dane Schiro (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti) finished 24th and freshman Max Mealy (Davis, CA/Davis) finished in 36th. In the Saber, freshman Geoff Chu (Short Hills, NJ/Millburn) finished in 24th.

The NCAA Championships will take place March 16-19 in Houston, Texas.
