Hopkins Men's Fencing Finishes Second At MACFA Championships

Blacksburg, VA - The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team totaled 80 points to finish second out of 14 squads at the MACFA Championships last weekend on the campus of Virginia Tech University. Junior Bryan Bishe' (Glen Ridge, NJ/Montclair Kimberley) won the individual foil title with a perfect 9-0 record, becoming the second fencer in JHU history to win three MACFA individual championships. Freshman Nick Marchuk (Ringoes, NJ/The Hun School at Princeton) went 8-1 to finish second in the individual foil championship, while senior Mark Riso (Jupiter, FL/The Benjamin School) came in 10th with an 0-9 mark.
Senior Matt Bouloubasis (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park) won the individual epee title with an 8-1 mark, while sophomore Jason Park (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Ramapo) was fourth in the individual sabre finals with a 6-3 record.
Hopkins won the team foil title with 33 wins, led by Marchuk's 12-1 record. Riso finished 11-1, while Bishe' went 10-3. Bouloubasis won 12 of 13 duals to lead the Blue Jay epee team to a second-place finish with 29 wins. Freshman Tom Fellows (Beverly, MA/St. John's Prep) went 9-3, while junior John Majewski (Wrentham, MA/King Philip Regional) finished 8-5. The Hopkins sabre team posted 18 wins to finish in eighth place. Park went 9-4, while junior Free Lee (Garland, TX/North Garland) finished 6-7 and freshman Nick Gonzalez (Houston, TX/George Bush) posted a 3-10 record. Hopkins will compete in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals on March 13 in State College, PA. -30- |
