EASTON, PA - The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team finished third at the 2009 MACFA Championships to finish in the top three for the seventh straight season. The Blue Jays finished third in the Foil and fourth in both the Epee and the Sabre. Three Blue Jays medaled in the individual competition, highlighted by senior Ben Dorfman's (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon) second place finish.
In the Foil, Dorfman went 12-4 in the A-strip to lead the Blue Jays. Senior David Ferguson (New York, NY/Stuyvesant) went 13-3 in the B-strip. And in the C-strip, senior Jimmy Einsiedler (Falmouth, ME/Waynflete School) and junior Paul Nunley (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) combined to go 13-3. Hopkins has finished in the top three in the Foil every year for the last 10 years. Dorfman went on to claim silver in the individual competition and is now 56-21 on the season in the foil and 60-23 overall. For his career, he now boasts 232 overall wins to rank 15th all-time in JHU history, in all weapons.
In the Epee, junior Harry Oppenheim (Weston, FL/University School of NSU) went 9-7. In the B-strip, sophomore Nick Krywopusk (Richboro, PA/Princeton Day School (NJ)) went 12-4. And in the C-strip, sophomore Thomas Ronan (New Haven, CT/Pinkerton Academy (NH)) and junior Ian McCue (Yardley, PA/Princeton Day School (NJ)) combined to go 12-4. Krywopusk claimed bronze in the individual competition and is now 70-34 on the season and 143-73 (137-73 Epee) for his career. He now ranks 15th in program history in the Epee with 137 wins.
In the Sabre, sophomore Max Wieder (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) went 13-3 in the A-strip. While in the B-strip, sophomore Michael Fellows (Beverly, MA/St. Johns Prep) went 13-3 as well. And in the C-strip, senior David Hill (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) went 12-4. Wieder went on to finish third in the individual competition in the Sabre. He is now 105-39 on the season and 195-69 for his career. His 105 wins this season tie John Roberts' school single-season record (Sabre) and are tied for fifth in program history among all weapons. Wieder's 195 career wins rank 11th all-time in school history in the Sabre. Fellows took seventh in the individual competition.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, March 7 at the NCAA Regionals at Drew University in Madison, NJ.
