STATE COLLEGE, PA - The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team went 2-2 at the Penn State Invitational and is now 14-4 on the season. JHU defeated North Carolina (16-11) and Haverford (17-10), but fell to #1 Penn State (26-1) and Duke (17-10). Freshman Max Wieder (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) led the Blue Jays with seven wins in the Sabre.
Against the #1 Nittany Lions, the Blue Jays lone point of the match came from junior David Ferguson (New York, NY/Stuyvesant) in the Foil. Ferguson went 1-2 in his bouts. In the match against Duke, Hopkins won the Epee 6-3, but lost in the Sabre (6-3) and the Foil (8-1). In the Epee, junior Dan Zielinski (Bernardville, NJ/¬¬Bernardville), sophomore Harry Oppenheim (Weston, FL/University School of NSU) and freshman Nick Krywopusk (Richboro, PA/Princeton Day School (NJ)) each went 2-1 to win the weapon.
Despite losing in the Sabre and the Foil by 5-4 scores, Hopkins dominated in the Epee, winning 8-1 to defeat North Carolina overall. Krywopusk and freshman Thomas Ronan (New Haven, CT/Pinkerton Academy (NH)) both went 3-0 in their bouts to lead the way for the Blue Jays in the Epee. Against Haverford, wins in Sabre (7-2) and Foil (6-3) helped Hopkins to the win despite losing in the Epee (5-4). Junior Ben Dorfman (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon), Ferguson and sophomore Ian McCue (Yardley, PA/Princeton Day School) all went 2-1 in the Foil. And in the Sabre, it was Wieder and senior Jake Sand (Laverock, PA/Germantown Friends) leading the way with three wins apiece.
Wieder leads all Blue Jays with 37 wins on the season and is 37-14 overall. Also posting 30+ wins this season is Dorfman (31-8). Krywopusk leads in the Epee with a 25-11 record.
