LORTON, VA - The Johns Hopkins men's crew team opened its season at the Occoquan Chase in Lorton, VA this past weekend. The Blue Jays next compete at the Head of the Charles in Cambridge, MA October 21-22.

Hopkins opened with a 15th place finish in the Men's Open Single, with senior Barry Tong (Napa, CA/Vintage) coming in with a time of 20:21.2950. Next up was the Men's Open Double, where senior Wes Fredericks (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) and junior Chris Vaglia (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) finished fourth of seven. The pair finished in 16:46.7310.

The Blue Jays then competed in the Men's Open Lightweight double. Sophomores James Robinson (Plano, TX/Greenhill) and Mike Godar (Crownsville, MD/Mount Saint Joseph) finished first with a time of 17:38.7250. Coming in second was senior Lukasz Bugaj (Kalamazoo, MI/Portage Northern) and sophomore Taylor Reese (Lewisberry, PA/Red Land) with a time of 19:40.8980.

In the Men's Varisty Eight, Hopkins finished sixth out of 15 with a time of 14:30.2640. In the boat for the Blue Jays were Tong (Cox), senior Teddy Drivas (New York, NY/Stuyvesant), Bugaj, Vaglia, Fredericks, junior Josiah Drewien (Hailey, ID/The Community School), senior Bobby Mattina (Wilmington, DE/Tower Hill), Viemiester and Cameron Ward. In the Men's Novice Eight, the Blue Jays finished 12th out of 14th with a time of 17:47.1340. In the boat for the novice eight were Tristan Levey (cox), Dante Ross (stroke), Jim Steinhardt, Nick Kreston, Zach Senders, Josh Crist, Jose De La Guerra, Alex Baish, Nick Pantaleo and Tong.
